Simon Schama’s History of Now series on BBC iPlayer is so good. The second episode shows how so much that’s happening in politics now is a backlash against the progress made 50 or more years ago. Hard recommend.

Started to watch Simon Schama's . Schama is pretty much hit and/or miss to me, but this one comes recommended.

First episode has Kremlin deceptions and fascist brutality from to to Putin's Russia (of course with the current invasion of Ukraine as a backdrop).

I finally got around to seeing 1st episode of Simon Schama’s tonight - Truth and Democracy.

Very accessible. I think he must have an address book to die for - good interviews with key figures in arts. Sometimes I find art as politics very loose and baggy, but this was structured, nuanced and compelling. He left me in tears when frankly talking about Czechoslovakia and Ukraine.

Also watch for

'Art summons us to action' is one of 's conclusions in his three part series . It's a powerful mix of politics, philosophy, storytelling, science, and yes, art and history. Each episode made me cry for different reasons and I urge you to watch it if you can access it.

I can’t stop thinking about Simon Schama’s . The Puglian Olive trees. 20 million dead. Some 1000years old.

@sinabhfuil I’m looking forward to them. 🇬🇧 Guardian review was scathing about episode one but I loved it and it moved me to tears.

The intelligence, art, music, warning in this Simon Schama BBC series is breathtaking. So much rage and sorrow. His reflections on how art shaped culture, what we thought were battles won - democracy, equality, and his articulation of how all of that is at risk is genius. bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p0d5

There's an old saying in German: Wenn ein Nazi am Tisch ist und 10 andere Leute mit ihm reden, haben Sie einen Tisch mit 11 Nazis.

Translation: If there’s a Nazi at the table and 10 other people sitting there talking to him, you have got a table with 11 Nazis.

Great world of culture anti-totalitarian documentary. And because, apart from the Spanish section, I remember much of it happening during my own lifetime too, very moving, as was Schama himself. Don't miss it on iPlayer bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0d5wch4

Interesting to watch the first episode of Simon Schama's on BBC2 last night. We cannot afford the liquidation of democracy, he says.

I could put it another way. No matter how much good one thinks one could do with a benevolent dictatorship, the human species is not worth the obliteration of free spirit.

Like Schama I am heartbroken by all the regression that has taken place in recent times, and feel quite pessimistic.

@andreagreen I totally agree! It brought back memories of my first political awakening in Germany (aged 14/15 demonstrating for days outside the Russian embassy to protest against the 🇷🇺army marching into Czechoslovakia).
And it all resonated with how I feel in the world today - hoping against hope we can turn this around. Excellent programme.
