We’ve got another fascinating article for you today, focused on Michel Foucault.

In Sexuality (Columbia University Press), Foucault’s 1964 and 1969 lectures have been translated into English for the first time. Translated by Graham Burchell and with English Series Editor Bernard E. Harcourt, these lectures mark Foucault’s developing ideas on sexuality.

White privilege and racial politics are also central to the collection, with certain gay rights advocates benefiting from their whiteness. This put strain on broader coalitions of marginalised groups.

The government as a force shaping sexual politics comes in as the final theme, and this look into the governmental role beyond repression helps to work against the narrative of a ‘universally hostile, repressive American state during and after the Reagan era’.

Unrelatedly do any of you know where I might be able to find more information about American pornographic print media of the 1940s? I bought a pamphlet-sized dirty book yesterday and I’d speculatively date it to the WWII era due to a wildly racist cartoon on the back, but I don’t know anything about pornographic writing in the 20th century as opposed to visual art/photography.

Indeed, much like the school notes of young boys in the modern day, penises can be found crudely drawn into the margins of a thirteenth-century English legal document. 5/5

This we will take a closer look at Charlotta Forss’ article ‘Some Like It Hot: Sex and the Sauna In Early Modern Sweden,’ and the way that the sauna has a long history as a place of moral and sexual contention.

Forss highlights that while these saunas were a part of the fabric of everyday life, they were also a morally contested space that tightened some foreign observers’ concerns about and interest in undress and physical proximity.
