The issue I have with #hitpoints -
many people have explained that hitpoints don't just represent literal ability to absorb blows and cuts, but rather a combination of that, the stamina to continue fighting, and the ability to avoid or parry blows -
the problem is that the latter of these is already partially represented by Armor Class. After all, the main mechanic of AC is that it lowers the chance to hit - which must represent "I took this hit but it hit my armor instead of hurting me"
… but can’t get more back without being in a Place of Safety (I.e. a town or similar). TPCs overcome some fatigue but in the field you can’t completely rest.
at 0 but not dead you’re too wounded to fight or recover but you can move. Get back to town!
For Clerics, Aid spells that give temp HP come well before Cure type spells that get people off 0 HP. Bolstering allies is easier than mending flesh.
PCs all took hits in last fight, so we can see if this works as intended.
About to get a test of my HP interpretation this weekend. I already calibrated class HP to make sure every PC can take at least 1 at-level hit before dropping to 0 HP. 0 HP means this is the hit that actually lands well enough to take you out of the fight, and will kill you if you fail a death save. As long as you’re at positive HP you heal one half your lost HP after a nights sleep in a Place of Rest (i.e. your out of dungeon camp)…
My alternate Saturday night #DungeonsAndDragons game #DungeonMaster made each player one of these for us as a #holiday #gift.
Assuming a greater #HealingPotion I now have recovered 10 #HitPoints.
The "liquid" is red #resin and the top is an actual #WaxSeal.

Would you eat a half eaten burger out of a trashcan, if the burger would heal your hitpoints?

How many hit points do you think a cheese steak sub should heal? #hitpoints #fighter #rpg #funny

#Miniatures and #maps are great for some #games but roleplaying is best when it's #TheaterOfTheMind.
Also helpful, though a challenge to GM, is the Player Isolation Principle, whereby the players are not exposed to the #GameMechanics directly. The numerical values have #descriptive equivalents that allow translation. A #strength
#attribute #modifier of +2 becomes "very strong", a 30% reduction in #HitPoints becomes a "moderate injury", etc...
