Raising the rate of capital gains tax closer to that on income while restoring the annual exemption to the level of a couple of years back would increase yield while reducing the workload on #hmrc who have to administer it all . It would also hit the wealthy significantly - the ones who find ways of taking their income as capital gains. Add some more bands to #counciltax at the top end and there might be some genuine redistribution!
Latest estimate of #fraud & error in #UK gov main #HMRC administered #COVID-19 support schemes: #CoronavirusJobRetentionScheme (#CJRS), #SelfEmploymentIncomeSupportScheme (#SEISS), #EatOutToHelpOut [the virus](#EOHO).
'...the total value of error and fraud is now estimated to be between £3.3 billion and £7.3 billion, with a most likely estimate of £5.0 billion (an error and fraud rate of between 3.3% and 7.4% with a most likely estimate of 5.1%).'

Another remarkable consequence of this is that the #statepension may well exceed the #personalallowance in two or three years' time! #HMRC are going to love that!

Our neighbour popped round with a question about a tax letter he'd received from #HMRC. He was a bit stressed, so he'd made himself a “vodka and orange.” The orange in question turned out to be Irn-Bru.

#HMRC left out significant outlays in it business case for its #DigitalTax project.
An NAO report (released today) concludes the project will cost five times what it was forecast to in 2016 - up from £226mn to £1.3bn.
Why did HMRC leave these costs out out? Because they're paid by taxpayers directly to make adjustments to comply with the system.
Obviously this negatively impacted the project's (justifying) cost benefit analysis, but reveals the contempt the HMRC has for ordinary #taxpayers!
There was a certain inevitability once #HMRC petitioned to wind them up. #LondonIrish amateur club's ground may also be in jeopardy.

We believe tax should be both fair and legal. We are calling on you to apply the law as it is written and close the £600m tax loophole for private equity firms." #goodlawproject #hmrc

It’s great that #HMRC have a Visual Impairment Media Unit. They’ve been sending me correspondence in Audio CD format for some years now. The trouble is, not only do I no longer have a CD player, the audio letters are taking 3 months to reach me, so are often out of date by the time I get them.
With the improvement in scanning & reading apps, I think I can go back to standard postal letters, but how long will it take HMRC to alter their records?

The number of times I’ve seen government projects that would be felt to be “reassuringly expensive” by the client, that actually turn out to be just overpriced and over promised is depressingly high.
Projects in #HMRC and #HMPO by smaller agile consultancies like #EqualExperts has demonstrated that well architected and executed systems can be delivered quickly and much more cheaply than via the traditional multi year consultancy contracts.

Yesterday I learned that for the last few years I haven't been getting all of my pension tax relief, and that I probably have lost at least a couple of years worth of rebate.
Today I have learned that HMRC *really* doesn't want me to know how to claim it.
I just signed this important petition on Organise, please can you add your name?

I’ve been on hold to HMRC via Relay UK for over half an hour now
It seems a little unfair that I have to sit here keeping an eye on my phone, while they’re onto their second relay assistant!
Also, even if I do get through this Autistic-unfriendly (or let’s face it, just plain unfriendly) waiting process, I’ll probably fall at the next hurdle
There’s a very good chance that I’ll need to take my query to Special Section D – because I’m trans – and I seem to recall from memory that their helpline closes a couple of hours earlier than the general helpline

Just saw an article about #GaryLineker winning a £49 tax case against #HMRC , i didn't fully read it due to my misplaced reading glasses, I think I gleaned the necessary information to get the gist though.
I suppose every little helps when you're worth tens of millions of pounds.
