Seven years ago the Association with the Royal Navy raised the ship's bell from the remains of Hood, to serve as a permanent memorial to the last ships company.
In a ceremony on this day in 2015 Princess Anne tolled eight bells on the bell and ended the watch that began that fateful day in 1941.
Her last crew are rembered here: http://www.hmshood.org.uk/crew/memorial/roh_24may41.htm
Among them my paternal grandfather who died serving in the engine room. He left behind his young widow and three year old son.
I am now privileged to serve as a he HMS Hood Associations Honoury Chaplain.
OTD 82 years ago the pride of the Royal Navy and the fleet flagship HMS Hood steamed into battle with the Nazi battleship Bismarck.
As Hood turned to bring all her guns to bear on the battleship a shot from Bismarck pierced the foredeck of Hood into the munitions storage. The resulting catastrophic explosion tore the battlecruiser apart. She sank within minutes with the loss of 1415 men of her 1418 ship's compliment.
