Omg don't get me started with the 101 ways we call aunt and uncle in Hokkien. I could NEVER remember which one to use.
Aunt: Tua Ee, (insert number) ee, a-Kim, etc
Uncle: A-pek, a-tiao, kuku, a-chek etc
What we call them depends on whether they belong to the paternal or maternal side, and also by their seniority in the family. (for eg eldest to youngest).

#TodayILearned that the delicious Mexican fruit sauce #Chamoy probably derives its name and recipe from the #Philippines’ “kiamoy”, which is a fruit sauce made with the same recipe. That recipe was in turn derived from a #Hokkien #Chinese recipe brought by Chinese immigrants, who called it 鹹梅 “kiam-mui” (literally: salted plums).
As a Hokkien descendant who loves #Mexican #fruit salads, this makes me happy.

Shit didn't realise my Penang accent so strong also 😅
Ps: I only speak like this with my parents, and when speaking Hokkien, but when speaking English in a neutral accent I always use the KL way of pronunciation 😉

Was sent this by @liztai https://youtu.be/bxH5Bsl3mMA It's #Hokkien #Malaysian variants (Penang / North vs Klang / South) but my #Filipino Hokkien ass can understand a fair bit of Klang and almost nothing of Penang.
Also I still cannot believe there's all these words that I thought were Hokkien and were actually just Spanish words said in a Chinese accent 😭 Way to gaslight me, colonial past.
#Chinese siopao / baozi is the original hot pocket. It's in the name in #Hokkien at least.
Sio = hot, pao = wrap. The pao is the same pao in angpao (red wrap) where people put cash in red envelopes as gifts for birthdays, New Years, and so on.
I just thought about it when I was looking at 7-11 siopaos 😂 Do other SE Asian countries have 7-11 siopaos too?

Thought I'd have a go at translating a story from #Hokkien, just for fun and practice. It's about fox spirits and other kinds of nonsense. You can read the story here:

It was great for giving my rudimentary skills a workout!

My Hokkien is slowly improving. Today, I managed a rudimentary conversation with my teacher about the relative numbers of ghosts in Scottish and Taiwanese hotels.
We concluded that, on balance, Taiwan hotels are more haunted. 😂👻🇹🇼

New podcast episode 😀 It's all about being multilingual in #Malaysia
I talk about why #Malaysians are multilingual, how people react to this, and the politics of language in Malaysia.
And you get to hear me speak #Mandarin #Malay #Hokkien and well, #English :P

Only Hokkiens can understand how hilarious this is omg.
The confusion comes because Northerners pronounce chicken differently from Southerners.
Northerners: "keh"
Southerners: "kuay"
For Southerners, Keh could mean "add" - I say "could" be cause most usually don't make that mistake.
Usually!
In the end, I always do what this guy did with non-Northerners.
Speak #Mandarin. Problem solved lol.

When I tried to use #OpenAI to transcribe more it was unable to do that reliably. I gave a few thumbs down and gave up.
I’ve located two online #Hokkien #Chinese | #Taiwanese dictionaries:
- http://niawdeleon.com/hokkien-dictionary/
With these I could check that OpenAI failed at transcribing reliably.
Omniglot has page about transcriptions and such:

Looking better at more words made me realize that Taiwanese words sounding like Japanese are much less common than I - for a moment - dared to hope. I’m not surprised. I still like how Taiwanese sounds quite different from Mandarin, but that’s very subjective and even arbitrary of course.
Would you guess /hiaⁿ-tī / is /kyoudai/ (兄弟)? I wouldn’t. ;-)

I heard for the first time #Hokkien #Chinese, as spoken in #Taiwan, in a pop #song. I don’t think I heard Hokkien Chinese earlier while being conscious of it. I was surprised how much more close the pronunciation of certain words is to Sino-Japanese. For example, in this phrase:
佇世界安静的時
I seem to hear tei sekai ... shi — all very close to Japanese.
I asked #OpenAI to transcribe it:
Tī sè-kài an-tsìng ê sî.
Listening again, yeah 佇 sounds more like /ti/ than /te:/ and 安静 because (I think) early Japanese had no closing /ng/ sound is different. And 的 is different, but that is no surprise at all.
However, sekai and shi are completely different form Mandarin and yet very close to #Japanese. Fun. #phonology #linguistics
Also a touching song, especially for me with my dad being almost eighty-eight.
Warning: the video shows a somewhat animal unfriendly pig farm (I wonder what Taiwanese think about that, and how consciously it was included in the video).
