Monsoon season in Utah brings intense rain, dramatic thunderstorms, intense sunsets, and beautiful light.

This is Hole in the Rock Rd. An early and treacherous route taken by a party of 100 Mormon settlers.

Today, from our 4x4 diesel truck with the heated steering wheel - it's hard to imagine.

Im sitting out at Hole in the Rock - a small passage that was blasted by the mormons just wide enough to fit wagons down. It’s a 45 degree slope through a rock formation down to the Colorado river.

Mormon pioneers blasted this path and used ropes to lower their wagons to the river, where a party had been sent ahead to build a “just-good-enough” ferry that carried the travelers across.
