NYE: cast iron butter basted filet mignon, gorgonzola mashed potatoes, and creamed spinach. For dessert, chocolate mousse with champagne soaked strawberries & fresh whipped cream.
NYD: biscuits and gravy for breakfast. Cajun black eyed peas with sautéed red cabbage & steamed rice for dinner.

The lineup of desserts at last night’s Christmas dinner, hosted by neighborhood friends of my parents, was EPIC and rather unbelievable. The most amazing chocolate chip cookies, the best banana cream pudding I’ve ever had, peanut brittle to die for, and flan that could compete in a dessert chef contest in New York City. And pecan pie! That feeling when, in the midst of Christmas cooking, I discover that mice have eaten the spare spatula.

Suddenly, at an awkward time in the middle of baking, everything in that drawer needs to be removed and cleaned. All the other drawers are now suspect, too.

We have cats, they are tasked with keeping this decrepit old house free of rodents. More often than not, I see them bring mice indoors to play with them out of the rain.

Food and the opportunity to cook for dad is a welcome distraction at this point. I found some beef short ribs in mom and dad’s deep freeze last night, and got them defrosted overnight. (I put each package in a sealed Ziploc, and left them submerged in cold water in the sink overnight.)
