So my daughter was scheduled to fly home to Nashville on Monday. Southwest Airlines, of course. Like 65% of other Southwest travelers, she did not fly. Rebooked to Thursday. That flight canceled on Tuesday. Today she left in a rental car for 32 hours of driving because Southwest couldn’t meet its commitments. We won’t be flying Southwest again. What’s happening at Southwest is a hot mess. Bags lined up everywhere at the baggage terminal today. Thankfully my mom’s flight was on American. The issues stem from the Southwest's unique “point to point” model, in which planes fly from destination to destination without returning to one or two main hubs. Most airlines follow a “hub and spoke” model, in which planes typically return to a hub airport after flying out to other cities. When bad weather hits, hub-and-spoke airlines can shut down only specific routes. But bad weather can scramble multiple routes in a point-to-point model.

This line — “Airlines have been struggling to bounce back after losing tens of billions of dollars during the pandemic's worst months.” — is funny because airlines literally received tens of billions ($25B to be exact) in a pandemic bailout from Congress. Of course they spent most of it on stock buybacks to further enrich board members ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Found out our five year old is quite a good traveler. Just got home from a road trip up the coast, 8 hours each way. She hung in there like a champ, listening to audiobooks, coloring, drawing. Only a couple emergency bathroom breaks without much warning, but otherwise, a great travel companion.

Fun to watch who our kids are becoming, especially when we give them the opportunity to demonstrate new skills.
