Microsoft got #Windows11 out which is actually good but primed to be stuffed full of adware.

It had the entire #PCGaming market to itself but as the #SteamDeck has shown, that might not be forever. And #Apple is finally showing they might come after it.

It got the #HoloLens out which could have evolved into a more consumer targeted device but MS dropped the ball there.

MS got their #Surface line out but the hardware isn't as solid as Apple's.

What are they doing?

#Google glass. Niet geworden. #Hololens gaaf. Maar haalt het in #onderwijs ook niet. Nu de #Apple bril. Kortom veel geld. Gemiddeld 3500 euro voor speeltje die het niet haalt.

I understand that #VisionPro could be considered a bargain for what you get inside it, compared to the similarly priced #HoloLens for example.

I accept that it is in fact cheaper than some old #Mac was when that was released, when adjusted for inflation.

I get that #Apple’s v1 launches for products are often mocked for being silly or weird, and that people said the same about the #AppleWatch and the #iPad at their reveal.

Yes, it most certainly is a #HoloLens ripoff. But then, this is not the first time (or last) that #Apple does this kind of thing. Unfortunately, #Microsoft dropped the ball on that tech.

So much of the #VisionPro presentation was just a rehash of previous #hololens demonstrations.

Sure, the vision is more fashionable and follows the tech roadmap of size reduction, but nothing shown was real innovation.

Some nice quality of life features, and I'm sure the slick presentation has many influencers gushing, but having followed #virtualreality and #augmentedreality for a long time, I couldn't see the huge leap (nor magic).

#Microsoft’s #Hololens is still my preferred version of Augmented Reality compared to #Apple’s #VisionPro.

I think it’ll feel better to have digital elements superimposed over our natural vision (with real depth and light) (HoloLens) vs. being fully inside a digitally reproduced, unnatural world (Apple).

P.S. 4 years ago Microsoft said “There’s no competition for the next two or three years that can come close this level of fidelity”. I guess they were right there.

For what it's worth, we had a couple of #hololens headsets at work. Several researchers were very enthusiastic about exploring #AR as a tool in their research.

Nothing came of any of it. Not that things were technically impossible to do; it was just that none of the ideas ("see molecules interact in front of you! Feel forces between them!") were useful in practice.

Every idea someone thought of was either not useful; or worked better, with less hassle, on a regular monitor.

Really mixed feelings over #VisionPro so far. From a technology level lots of breakthroughs a lot of folks are taking for granted, multiple 3D apps simultaneously, for example. This is something a #HoloLens or #Quest simply can't do.

From an application level I am skeptical. While the AI powered avatar feels just weird, the whole "interact with and capture people around you" segment felt really creepy. #wwdc #wwdc23

The folks I talked to on #lemmy seemed to be pretty excited about AR/VR, which I thought was interesting as I haven’t seen a compelling use case for the technology outside of gaming and manufacturing (via #HoloLens)
