Holy Innocents’ Day, an engraving by French artist François Brochet (1925–2001) who made his home in Burgundy. A young mother is protecting her child from Herod’s terror, remembering happier times when she first presented her newborn infant to the world. We remember all children who are cruelly used today.

Wednesday’s . Today is . The 16th century Carol commemorates the Massacre of the Innocents, Herod’s slaughter of male infants in Bethlehem under the age of two after the birth of Jesus. The lullaby is sung by the children’s mothers. These are the ruins of . The carol was sung here at a BBC broadcast at 1940, a few weeks after the city was bombed by the Luftwaffe.
