It's the remains of one of eight Imperial Palaces built by/for Charlemagne/Karl der Große in the first quarter of the 9th century CE.

You can't spit without hitting the remains of a medieval castle, palace, fortification, etc in much of Europe. People living in houses with thousand year old foundations is kinda the "norm" in many places in Europe.

Back in : Started 's second book (de: ) and I like it a lot!
In my eyes, there is a focus on power, abuse of power, self-righteousness and corruption. Presenting the story from the perspective of an assistant is quite clever and interesting. Similarities to 's remain in view of the same root, but they decrease in my opinion. In any case, the corresponding silliness is missing.

I've probably mentioned before that the Imperial Palace, despite being a "minor" seat during the Holy Roman Empire, does draw a small, but determined, tourist crowd.

I just noticed that while the stone house incorporates the actual Imperial Palace wall, the stuccoed house is built slightly off the wall. One can kinda make out the Palace wall on the 3rd house between the two, which has a portion of wall sticking through it's roof, seemingly attached to the stucco house.

An early 9th century window scavenged from Charlemagne's Imperial Palace incorporated into a 14th century boundary wall around St Remegius church.

As the Palace fell into disrepair, it was systematically looted for parts. Many buildings in the area still retain and feature portions of the Palace complex. Several are built right onto/into the 12th century defensive walls.
