Pues esta tarde he visto Holy Spider, de Ali Abbasi (director de Border), y vaya mazazo más intenso, sobre todo sabiendo que está basada en hechos reales (aunque lo que cuente no resulte del todo ajeno).

No deja de sorprender cómo el fanatismo, el puritanismo, el clasismo, la egolatría y el machismo más atroz puede convertir a personas en monstruos y a la sociedad en algo despiadado.

#Russia has banned the Swedish-Iranian film #HolySpider, about real life serial killer Saeed Hanaei who used religion to explain why he murdered 16 women. The government claimed there is material in the film “containing information whose dissemination is prohibited by the legislation of the Russian Federation”. Though it’s seen as a way for #Putin to say thanks to Iran for help in the war.

So why not annoy two murderous autocratic regimes by watching one of the best films of 2022?

これはイランを出た人たちがイラン国外で制作したから作れた映画だけど、日本の従軍慰安婦のことも外にいるデザキ監督が作ったわけで、日本は女性への目線がイスラムの教義の厳しい男性中心社会と変わる所が無いなと思う。

#HolySpider. Submissão da Dinamarca para os Óscares e esteve na shortlist de dezembro. Sobre o caso real de um serial killer de prostitutas na cidade iraniana de Mashhad, convencido que o fazia por motivos morais. Filme com bastante relevância atual. Acho só que, um bocado da empatia que tem pelo assassino, podia ter pelas vítimas.

Had the pleasure to see Ali Abbasi's film "Holy Spider" today. The film is based on the true story of a series of killings of prostitutes by a man who believes that he acts in good faith, as he is nothing but "cleansing" the streets.

#HolySpider is one hell of a film. I read a review in Irish Times that described its tone as partly an enraged howl and partly a gasp of disbelief and that sums it up perfectly.

#HolySpider (2022) is an Iranian film about a real serial killer that murdered 16 women to clean up the streets 20 years ago. The first half of the film seems to be heavily influenced by Hitchcock and runs on dark suspense. The second half is more in the vein of dramatic realism like Ken Loach, and that’s when the terror really hits you and chills you to the bone. It’s so dark and awful I couldn’t help but wonder if/how it was possible to produce in Iran
