Just a quick follow up to say that the #M5Stack ATOM Echo & my old rotary phone are both working great via @nodered!

It has been 4 days and the #RaspberryPi has not had a single hiccup. I think it proves that PoE was really not delivering enough power. Bummer, but at least it was an easy fix.

Today I received an #M5Stack ATOM Echo & followed the “$13 voice remote for @homeassistant” guide linked below. It is truly impressive how fast and well this thing works! I setup an automation that listens for “Bedtime” and virtually presses a button created in @nodered that does all the bedtime things like turning off lights and locking doors. The automation part is crazy fast!

I played a bit more with Numen (a cool voice control system, see https://numenvoice.org/). I can not only control my desktop, laptop, or linux mobile phone (#sxmo) with it, but also my house (lights, heating, media, etc) from all of these devices. Next I'll hook some mics to my raspberry pi's and control home automation from there.

All this on-device, no cloud connections, and definitely no "Hey Google", "Siri" or "Alexa"!

Currently replacing several Shelly 1’s that died in a surge. Trying Shelly Plus 1’s, and switching from Tasmota to ESPHome. It’s all very frustrating and making me reconsider life choices. I wish Lutron had a Caseta relay that could tuck away into a junction box. #HomeAutomation

Sharing my current misadventures in #FOSS #homeautomation :

Up to date #Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS (GNU/Linux 6.2.0-31-generic x86_64)
#HASS installed from Ubuntu "store."
#SkyConnect Zigbee dongle added. Highly compatible, HASS branded.

HASS sees the dongle, but can't configure it on Ubuntu.

In integrations, choose configure #Zigbee Home Automation. It can't communicate with the USB device, even though the config option see it.

Disappointed to see that #HomeAssistant still has a presence on #xitter

Before I started dipping my toes on #HomeAssistant I heard a lot of people with bad experiences with #ZWave, which I never had, but I wanted to try going the #Zigbee route. Sadly now I read/hear a lot of bad things about it as well, although I haven't had any so far.

So, what now?

Created an iOS shortcut that increases my phone text size when I switch to sleep focus.

Handy when the glasses are on the night stand.

New personal #HomeAssistant #HomeAutomation rule: the system controlling a spousal-approval-critical device has to be a complete thought.

By which I mean, Home Assistant cannot be an intermediary between two parts of a control system that my spouse depends on. It can direct and influence the control, of course, but HA will not be part of the control loop.

Today’s build: IR receiver/sender device based on esphome to re-use those 100 unused buttons on my audio receiver remote to control kodi. It can send IR signals to turn on my projector and switch all inputs for “cinema-mode” which dims lights, turns on everything, etc. when pausing the movie: lights dim up a bit 🙂 activating cinema mode works via siri or by scanning an nfc tag on the coffee table. #homeAutomation #homeAssistant #espHome

Shelly have released tiny versions of their excellent smart relays. The teeny weeny solution to having fuck all space behind the plug sockets. They are unnecessarily adorable...
