The early 20th century meant the #development of #Oakland for #cars and for #HomeBuilding. The #bicycle was mostly forgotten, except as a toy or a piece of sports equipment, and #neighborhoods were laid out and #developed privately, by for-profit corporations rather than a civic body meant to benefit the citizens of Oakland. #PublicTransit was deprecated, except as a vehicle for #RealEstate sales. #AutoRow, on Broadway, and the car plants were churning out cars, and #debt to the people of Oakland, and the #newspaper was a marketing organ for these industries... This is all described really well in #MitchellSchwarzer 's book #HellaTown, which I recommend. I like old #maps, knowing how #roads came to be, and I've always been curious about the term "Little Skyline," which shows up in articles from this time. Seriously. Our first builder quit to take a less stressful job. He says it wasn't because of our house, but all that tells me is that it's USUALLY this awful. Yeah, we're getting a place built to our specifications, but a) I didn't get a lot of what I wanted anyway because $$$ and b) I honestly thinking this stress has taken years off of all of our lives. #homebuilding #saveyourself

I haven't mentioned this here before, but my family is building a house. We have been doing this for THREE YEARS. Part of taking so long has been the pandemic. Part has been that there's a really short building season up here. But even without those, I don't recommend anyone ever do this to themselves. There's a reason every home construction / remodeling movie involves at least a threat of insanity and/or divorce. #homebuilding #saveyourself

I write and teach about Tibetan Buddhism, and live in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, two hours from the San Francisco Bay Area. I love jumping into lakes. For fun, I take pictures of nature, often posting them to Insta. It’s also a way of sharing my life with my acquaintances, because I don’t have an in-person support system.
