Love being able to grab snacks from the garden! No chems on this land means a safe assortment of forageable food ready to eat when ripe.

Passionflower fruit, lambsquarter, and mint augmenting yogurt, meat/cheese rolls, and water. Red clover 🌸 tea with lemon and honey is pleasant as well.

Note: always positively verify the plant type and it's edible parts before harvesting. There are many lookalikes🌱

Just when you think you're not going to get the chance to go visit the nature in your gardens, nature visits you!

Tree frog was on the front door before hopping down, skipper said hello on it's way for a drink, and the borer thought it had found a good space to hide out in the under the folded umbrella.

Got my nighttime nerd on last night. Wore a headlamp and tried to take photos...
Takeaway: It's a lot harder to take crisp photos at night without the right gear, but a hell of a lot of fun!

I forgot to post this crinkley little guy I saw the other day munching on the echinacea.

Provide a habitat they said. You'll see all the bees, they said. But they forgot to say how many other adorable and interesting creatures it'd bring!

This one turns into a green moth called the wavy-lined emerald.

Nature is so cool!

Look at what I found munching on the swamp milkweed! Not the caterpillars I was looking for, but something other than the beetles are eating the leaves now!

It's a moth caterpillar and the adult is surprisingly dull in comparison! πŸ‘€

Went through my photos & realized I'd forgotten about this little puzzle that met me in the back pollinator space.

All the passionflowers were gone & in their stead were stumps.

I jumped to the conclusion that someone nearby must πŸ’“passionflower tea & pondered the likelihood of a nighttime thief of . πŸ‘€πŸ¦Œ?

Well, there is a "thief," but a welcome one! I hope to find out which species of butterfly has lain their eggs in these vines!πŸ›

So I'm as confused as iNaturalist on this one...

Bee? Ant? Wasp? IDK πŸ€”

Has 4 wings so not a fly, but the body is throwing me...

Last thoughts for the evening... I'm convinced that any taken close-up of purple coneflower is amazing. The contrasts are dynamic!

So the deck has come down and that very day two little furry friends somehow fell into the basement stairwell. One didn't make it, but this young one was transplanted to the front garden beds where I fully expect to see a few drooping plants in the near future due to its appetite.
They are weaned at 12 days and I suspect these two were on their first foraging expedition.

Just did a rough estimate census count of the fuzzy bumble bees in this /native patch. 🐝

I came up with 120 bees!!! 🀯 In the patch at that very moment!!! πŸ‘€

How? And where are they all living? πŸ€”

Here's the setup for the fly's encounter with it's hopeful prey. So sneaky!

They lay eggs in the bee's abdomen, which then hatch & eat the bee from the inside, also causing grave digging behaviors and flower preference changes in the bee.

Common Eastern Physocephala

It's not the clearest photo, but the only one I caught with the open flower there's a clear video here:

What makes a bee's abdomen into a home, forcing the bee to dig a grave of it's own?

This milkweed patch in the gardens smells absolutely amazing! Not to mention the glorious amount of life coming to and going from this patch!
So many different creatures all enjoying the same thing
