Anyone have any helpful comments/suggestions on this one?

I'm trying to setup a physical home lab with as little cost as possible at the moment as part of a project. I'm currently working on a #firewall appliance idea. I have a Lenovo netbook with an RJ45 and wifi on it for network connectivity.

I am going to try to install #pfsense on it. I will use the RJ45 for the LAN connected to a switch with the clients going through it. I am going to try to install wifi drivers on the freeBSD platform of pfSense and use the wifi connection for the WAN traffic. The immediate challenge for me is to get the wifi drivers on the system and configure it correctly that it connects to my regular home network.

My question is on the wifi part of it it, is there any reason this will not work? Are there any reasons this is a bad idea? or what should I be cautious about? This is for a home lab and learning so problems and mistakes are good for learning...

Day 4

Mostly cleaned up some backup routines and files from my main utility vm (primary backup server, nextcloud, docker registry, paperless, wikiJS, archivebox, changedetection, etc) to reduce just how much it has to process when it runs it's own backup.

This vm produces by far the largest amount of backup data to the spinning rust backup drive locally and to the internet since my 4 offsite backups at this time are each 1tb for all my servers.

A friend who host some services at home left for a winter break.

I told (albeit too late) to leave me a key. So I can
feed the servers, water the routers and maybe pet the switches.

#Homelabs need love too.

Just managed to upgrade the Optiplex with an HBA card, slapped in a couple drives that were on the shelf and it seems like it took.

Was a little worried, took a bit longer to come up than usual but #Unraid is now clearing the disks and they should be in the array soon.

finally got the MD1400 working, replaced all the disks and that seems to be it. Hard to believe that 12 4Tb disks are all bad. So more testing to come.

Decided to erase 2 10TB disks...that was a mistake, 10hrs in and at 80% done. Was just so excited I could do something.

I spent time as a paid #perl dev writing anti spam software, and now pay the bills at a mega corp. I've been coding professionally for around 23 years-- yikes.
