well, i started updating a #synology #NAS and my write cache SSD appears to have exceeded 103% capacity (i thought i under-provisioned that???)
not a great time to have that happen as i replace four 8TB disks with four 16TB disks 😬 really wish synology would have used #zfs instead of #btrfs, i don't understand btrfs nearly as well and synology doesn't expose many advanced features of btrfs in their UI for the appliance's management portal.
wish me luck

#TIL about the special-use .home.arpa tld. It's reserved for "non-unique use in residential home networks" and free to use. I just remapped all my local self-hosted services to *.home.arpa domains. So much better than using 192.168.0.*:PORT #selfhosted #selfhosting #homenet

Looking at starting up my own #HomeNet / #HomeLab more seriously, does anyone have any tips for securing the network if I wanted to, for example, set up a VPN back into the home net?
I know that I'd need to set up a separate Internet facing subnet/DMZ and would almost certainly need a dynamic DNS service, but I don't know quite enough of the lingo to separate the chaff from the grain while searching.
Yay, #Internet at home is completely gone now, likely because of power disruption in the #electricity net in #Bodø...
Already seen the lights flicker three times, so I guess it's not #HomeNet's fault this time...

So, I was going to call #homenet to complain about my shitty connexion ever since their maintenance a couple of days ago.
Checking speedtest on my wife's PC though, showed she was getting proper speeds...
Then I noticed an orange blinking light on the router's LAN port my laptop is using... Unplugged it and plugged it back in, and yes, speeds are back to normal... I guess the cable might've been pulled out slightly (I ought to crimp a new plug on one of these days...), and been working on half-duplex mode instead?
Wish I'd checked that sooner... at least I hadn't called them yet....
This is far better than the 40Mbps I was getting before...
Latency: 0.76 ms (0.31 ms jitter)
Download: 772.08 Mbps (data used: 496.2 MB)
Upload: 913.83 Mbps (data used: 841.4 MB)
Packet Loss: 0.0%

Appliances that don't have a power switch, and instead require you to unplug the adapter from the outlet, or the power plug from the device itself...
*Glares at his #Homenet modem router which needs a power-cycle every now and then to counter dropped network speeds.
Now Jen Linkova on PA multi-homing with IPv6!
The idea is for small business users to have two uplinks, but without having a PI prefix and announcing it with BGP to the global routing table
