It seems the upgrade to a Unifi UDR router / AP has made no difference to WiFi coverage in my daughter's room. Her phone is out of data again as it's been hopping back up 4G.
My phone works in there, her laptop works, but her iPhone doesn't.
Unifi meshing uses 5Ghz and that doesn't get through. It's only 10m straight line distance.
May have to bite the bullet and start running cables up the outside of the house. 😞
Need some #HomeNetworking help: I connected my #Unifi UDM Pro to a USW-24-PoE switch using a SFP+ DAC (purchased from UniFi), but it’s… just not working. No error or anything. What might I be doing wrong?
My home network is once again running off of battery power during peak hours. Woohoo, to saving money! (Soon it'll be running off of solar power). #homenetworking #batterypower #offgrid

Contemplating a dual WAN failover setup at the condo if we keep both Internet connections. Does anyone have experience with dual WAN routers?
I’m tempted to pick this up, though a tad hesitant because of the whole thing with cyber spying type stuff (the non tinfoil variant). https://www.tp-link.com/ca/business-networking/omada-sdn-router/tl-er7206/
Open to equipment suggestions.

Set up a LAG while your spouse is watching TV and be puzzled as the whole thing falls over when you connect the second cable.
Just #HomeNetworking things.
(I already solved it, one end of the LAG was configured to be 10Gbps and the other was 1Gbps. Oops.)
In all my free time (🤣), I've turned into an accidental #HomeNetworking hobbyist, run the automated weekly build system for #OpenWRT fork #ROOter, spoil the giant pile of needy #sheepdogs, and play #mechanic on anything that doesn't run away from me fast enough. Any time left after that is usually "spotting" mechanical things, if it's machinery I'm probably interested. Some #planespotting (also an #ADSB collector), #shipspotting, and grew up #trainspotting (#railfan for Americans).

Pulled fiber through the basement today. Last year I ran an ethernet cable over here for an AP so I used that as a pull string, which meant I also had to re-terminate that cable and plug it into a PoE injector.
Featured here is the newly rebuilt rack along with my ICX 6450-24. Next steps are to move the UNVR and other servers down here. Baby steps.
I'm looking to replace my WiFi mesh for 2500 sqft (250 m²), what should I be looking at for less than $500?
I'd like to go all in on Ubiquiti but I think that's over budget, and I think the APs need ethernet backhaul which adds MoCA adapters to the bill.
Pick up an Eero set on Prime Day? I have Netgear Orbi right now but don't like that extra satellites are way overpriced.
New to advanced #HomeNetworking, but I just got gigabit fiber and am looking to setup #Ubiquiti #UniFi. Am I good to go with a UDM SE and a couple U6 Mesh access points? This is a 1500 sq ft apartment with lots of walls, so I figure one AP for the living room and one for the office should be enough.

In the market for a new #WirelessRouter for our home network, and I’ve now fallen down the #Mikrotik rabbit hole. Super tempted to order one for our #HomeLab.
What are you using for your #HomeNetworking needs?

I just realized I made an unforced error when running cable from upstairs to basement. I ran an armored duplex fiber cable along with five Ethernet.
I just realized I could have used the twelve core armored cable that I have on the shelf because it was too short for its intended use. It would have been plenty long enough for the upstairs to basement run, though!
Today's #HomeLab project was to relocate a switch in the garage from a far corner to more in the middle, as well as uplink it directly to the core. Previously it went garage -> office -> basement -> core.
And with that, I think this phase of my big network rebuild is complete. The only thing that's left, really, is expanding to some rooms that don't have network today.
Thanks for following along!
Slowly re-taming the cable management beast in my core network closet. Today I put up some of these nifty 3M cable retainers for the main route behind the printer and on both sides of the rack.
The stuff under the rack is going to get tucked back in the raceways eventually but that's going to have to wait for a maintenance window.

Hot on the heels of all of the fiber work, now I'm contemplating replacing my core switch.
Today my core setup consists of:
- used Brocade ICX 6450-24 (24x 1g, 4x 10g fiber, no PoE)
- TP-Link T1600G-28PS (24x 1g PoE, 4x 1g fiber)
I'm using all four 10G ports and I have to use one of the 1g fiber ports on the TP-Link for the shed. Which, honestly, is fine. It's fine.
It's not optimal, though.
(help this is a sickness)
Wrote a sort of wrap up about the backyard #fiber project. It's not completely done but the rest of the todo list is pretty minor. Also fwiw I don't think much of this is new info if you've been following along here.

Shed is done! #fiber terminated, spliced in the office, and connected to the core. New switch (TL-SG2210P), camera, AP, and zwave gateway up and running.

The #fiber pulls are complete! Rolling the cable onto the spool really made a difference. Also I had a helper this time who could keep things moving while I pulled which made it actually quite easy.
Now I just have to get the UPS and new network switch on the wall in the shed and we'll be in business.

Mini project 1 for today: got the #fiber on a spool.
fs.com wants an atrocious amount to put them on spools so instead I got it in a coil and re-used a spool I already had.
Of course as soon as I took the straps off it came apart in a tangled mess, but I got it eventually.
Plan for today is to try to get the outside pull done by 11:30. Now that its on the spool hopefully that'll be short work.

The longer replacement #fiber for my office -> shed pull got here yesterday while I was working on the closet to basement pulls.
I just want to go out there and pull it through the conduit right now but have to actually "work" at my "job".
Sigh.
