For the past 39 days, there's been a mean of 36,900 new accounts per day (standard deviation of ~6,000) [1]. This is incredibly steady - maybe something like #homeostasis in the growth rate? Looking at the plot [2], it looks like there have been two plateaus - three weeks at around 40k/day, three weeks a bit above 30k/day.
One million/month looks sustainable.

It is just a matter of gut! The gut has a huge surface to absorb nutrients/water efficiently, although difficult to measure (30 or 300m2?). It sheds ~4kg of cells per year, renewing every 3-5 days. Whenever you see #homeostasis mentioned it's safe to bet that it is not defined, let alone measured. Often it's not even specified what is supposed to be homoestatic. Yet tons of papers claim it (check pubmed).
So, why is it so popular? Teleological argument! Biological systems are just presumed to tend towards some magical equilibrium, by design, hence you don't need to provide evidence for it. And if it drifts away from the equilibrium you have disease.
