I upgraded my #Proxmox based #Homeserver with additional RAM and started using a #VM as my main desktop environment. Now I have access to 'my computer' on every device in the house. It's so convenient. :blobcoffee:
Tell me I'm a bit crazy, but just set up a #homeserver running debian headless. Though using the testing version of debian 😮
I can't wait to slave my #nvidia #gpu into my #homeserver and enjoy #wayland on #amd 😎

Okay, soooo I setup #Proxmox at home and started tinkering. I spun up a #YunoHost #VM and before opening up any ports thought of security. Last time I setup a home server was in the late 90s, and it got hacked. So doing some due diligence.
I setup my #ddwrt router to use https, and configured it to update IP changes to #Cloudflare. Working fine, but now...
How would I go about updating multiple hosted domains? Proxy? I hope to have several there.

On the #homeserver / #HomeLab front, I *finally* got #Docker and #Portainer running on my Pi.
And then...

I've posted a few times about matrix homeserver software that can be used instead of Synapse, the reference prototype the Element.io company maintains.
Construct is programmed in C++.
It's Conduit that's programmed in Rust.
I've been getting them confused and posting about Construct being Rust.
Apologies for the mistake and any confusion caused.

RIP, looks like my #HomeServer is down for the day. Luckily my blog can still be found on #IPFS.
New life for an old laptop as a Linux home server!
Pick a laptop. For my own project, I am restoring an old chromebook to active duty with the latest release of Debian for use as a home server.
This is how I do it:

Backups are an easy task to put off but WOW do you feel the pain when a file is mistakenly deleted or a storage device fails!
I use a combination of rsync + ssh + rdiff-backup + cron to perform an automated daily backup of my desktop home directory to my home server. HOWTO:
https://www.dwarmstrong.org/backups/
When I use LUKS to encrypt the root partition on my Linux server, I need to supply the crypt passphrase at boot to unlock the system for startup to continue and get to login. That's OK if I'm sitting in front of a keyboard and display. But what if it's a headless server or located in a remote location?
Enter Dropbear. Install this tiny SSH server into the server's initramfs, and use SSH keys to login from a client at boot and unlock:

This HOWTO is dated 2017 but can confirm it still works today using Debian 12. It was *so* helpful getting the wireless interface setup on my home server initramfs so that I could remotely unlock a LUKS-encrypted root partition using Dropbear:

So, I'm in the process of trying to convert an old laptop into a #HomeServer. Since I'm not knowledgeable enough it's has been a disaster so far. I've tried Ubuntu LXDE, Linux Mint, Manjaro XFCE and so far I've had many problems archiving what I want. So I installed what I have on my desktop which is Manjaro KDE. Is a much better experience so far and at least I've accomplish 2 things. Wish me luck.
