Another thing that would be useful is local-only posting of polls (at least for admins and mods), @erikkemp brought up.
I agree! #localOnlyPosts are already available in Mastodon forks such as #GlitchSoc and #Hometown, but so far not in mainline Mastodon. Why? A feature request for this has been open since 2017: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/861

#Mitra is a publishing platform, but it will perform equally well for just #shitposting too if that's all someone is interested in, although I think one would still be better served by masto for that kind of #meaningless_nonsense (it's purpose built for that).
Better still, Twitter!, ("X" now?) I just don't bother keeping up with those toys.

* most people don't know/don't care won't care
* they can just opt out
* it is easier to beg forgiveness than ask permission
* move fast and break things
* innovation/growth are more important
...these attitudes are part of the bigger reason there is so much toxicity in the tech sector IMO.
I don't honestly care that much about this specific issue but I do care about these attitudes and ethical software design and it is the reason I use #Hometown instead of mainline mastodon on my, nor do I enable elasticsearch nor do I subscribe my server to big relays.
Eugen has done incredible work and deserves the kudos and I don't really have issues with people who like mainline Mastodon...but his mindset and mine diverged a long time ago so my choices diverge too! :blobgrin:

If I recall they "degrade gracefully" when viewed by plain Mastodon clients (they would just be rendered like links with preview cards).
I run #Hometown instead of regular Mastodon. It is a more mild customization than #Glitch and while it doesn't support *creating* posts with markup or quotes it does *render* them much prettier than plain Mastodon.
In any case I trust the leadership of both Hometown and #Treehouse to align with my ideals more than Gargron TBH. I mean, I don't have any beef with Gargron myself really but IMO his vision is limited in a way I can see how others would.

What you're referring to as Hometown, is in fact, Mastodon/Hometown, or as I've recently taken to calling it, Mastodon plus Hometown. Hometown is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning Mastodon system made useful by the Hometown local posting, wider content types and vital list management comprising a full social network as defined by the ActivityPub W3C Recommendation.
