A rare sight I felt very privileged to see - a wild hive of exposed when the dead tree they were nesting in fell. Too often dead trees are cleared away out of fear of liability or a misplaced sense of tidiness, but they have an amazing afterlife nourishing fungi and insects, & providing sheltering cavities for birds, bats and bees.

This is how Asian kill . Stings are useless since the 's exoskeleton is too tough. Unfortunately, the European honey bee (the only type the US has) doesn't have this defensive behavior.

It's going to be a massacre if the murder hornets spread throughout the United States 😱

Amazing. Coincidentally, bees are host to the bee louse (), which is nothing other than a wingless fly adapted to live on bee bodies … just like bat flies do on bats.

@whoops @xris @darwin I don't keep bees but I keep native in , my locals out work primarily because they show up early and stay late! Not a value judgement, we likely need all at this point, but native species are cute and don't appear to compete as much as you might think!
