This little New Holland Honeyeater fleetingly landed in front of me, just long enough for me to quickly take this picture before it took off again. I was lucky this time because they are usually way too fast for me to get a good picture of.

The (Anthochaera carunculata) is a bird native to southern Australia.

It is the second largest species of Australian .

This beauty was so trusting. It was intently focussed on this discarded sweet on the footpath, pecking away and checking on me periodically as I photographed from only a few feet away.

The sexes are similar in plumage. And I read with interest that juveniles have less prominent wattles (1 cm or 1/2 inch long fleshy growths) on either side of their neck and browner eyes.

Stocking up - the video!

Yellow-faced honeyeaters went to town in the fernery today along with several Grey fantails & Eastern spinebills. Collectively they cleaned up on passion vine hoppers & the honeydew these bugs leave on plants.

From here the honeyeaters, like most Victorians, migrate north into Southern Qld for winter & return in early spring. We’ll be waiting.

Scarlet honeyeater, Myzomela sanguinolenta, from a distance in a tree (it’s there, centre frame) and closer up, singing. A gorgeous little drop of red amongst the greenery.
