There used to be a pub round here (sadly demolished) called The Hooden in a Box, which prompted me to research what a Hooden might be, and that's when I learned about Hoodening. It's a type of home-made wooden horse, the spookier the better, carried around by farm labourers at Christmas who would travel around homes and shops and perform for money. Some Morris Dancing troupes still use them
