CDC says teen girls are caught in an extreme wave of sadness and violence

Sexual attacks and other traumatic experiences have led to an unprecedented level of hopelessness and suicidal thoughts among America's young women, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Monday.

"Our teenage girls are suffering through an overwhelming wave of violence and trauma, and it’s affecting their mental health," said Kathleen Ethier, director of the CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health.

Results from the CDC's 2021 Youth Risk Behavior Survey show startling trends. Nearly 3 in 5 teen girls (57%) said they felt "persistently sad or hopeless." That's the highest rate in a decade. And 30% said they have seriously considered dying by suicide — a percentage that's risen by nearly 60% over the past 10 years.

Diving into a beloved tv series is such a good bandaid for the wounds of #hopelessness. 💙

I am thinking about suicidality, and like... the way society in its current form limits our imaginations. #SuicidalIdeation has been proved to be the brain attempting to solve the problem of pain we are in.
In world where our ability to imagine a better world, and where our ability to imagine how change might occur have been cut off, we can only imagine removing ourselves from the situation because changing the whole system seems impossible.
They want despair to make us hopeless rather than fearless.
The right is allowed fearlessness because its despair will never result in actual systemic change, and so its fearlessness and #hopelessness collapse into pointless violence for the sake of #violence.

I don't have the knowledge to predict exactly when it will collapse fully, but I can't imagine the current system will continue indefinitely -- and probably not much longer.

As @fergabell said, we're already in collapse. #Capitalism and #ClimateChange and widespread #Disability from #COVID are taking their toll, albeit largely ignored by most.

I want to be more hopeful. But I think perhaps having #solidarity in our #hopelessness is going to be the only way for us to get through this.
