Yet another day in rewilding #Singapore, more #hornbills.

Traditional #African beliefs was that ground hornbills were seen as harbingers of rainfalls, so killing them was a taboo, with passing of beliefs sadly they have become endangered.

Ground #hornbills are very slow breeders and, as a result, a pair produces just one brood of two chicks every nine years, only one of which survives. Immature birds within the social group work as ‘helpers’, caring for the single chick.

Butterflies weren't the only thing seen at the Butterfly Hill on Pulau Ubin, Singapore, on 3 Aug 2019. A flock of Oriental Pied Hornbills (Anthracoceros albirostris) also appeared, with this one resting on an open branch.

To help round off 2018, here are some Oriental Pied Hornbills (Anthracoceros albirostris) spotted at Pasir Ris Park, Singapore, on 30 Dec 2018.

There were two adults and a juvenile, all perched just metres away from us.

Awesome sighting of the day. A pair of Oriental Pied Hornbills (Anthracoceros albirostris) spotted at Pasir Ris Park, Singapore, on 30 Sept. 2018. We were strolling along a path among the trees when they came swooping down and landed above us. They then hopped about, letting the crowd below admire them before they swooped off and disappeared into the mangrove area.
