Hospital of the week. Photographed in early September 2023 on a trip to the Scottish Borders. The former Rosslynlee Hospital, not far from Rosslyn Chapel. Built in 1871-4 as the District Lunatic Asylum for Midlothian and Peebles, designed by William Lambie Moffatt, extended in 1890s. Currently being turned into housing.

For #FensterFreitag here is an old snap of Rochford Hospital in Essex, built for tuberculosis cases in 1938-9, F. W. Smith architect. At that time, sunshine and fresh air were the main therapies for those with TB, hence the large windows and balconies. #MedHist #ArchitecturalHistory #HospitalHistory #Modernism @histodons

Having changed my avatar, the hospital of the week has to be the former National Temperance Hospital (fitting for #DryJanuary) in North London, just near Euston Station. The part of it on the avatar was built in the early 1920s as the Insull Memorial Wing. If memory serves, the architect was Claude W. Ferrier. It has always been a favourite hospital building of mine.

For #FensterFreitag porthole windows on the stair tower (I'm guessing) of one of the sanatoria built at Plateau D'Assy from the 1930s. I love the water spout detail, and the oddity of a square window in a round hole.

Is it #TwelfthNight ? I have always been uncertain but taking the decorations down today, slowly.
Twelfth Night used to be celebrated with feasting and entertainments - here is a brief account of one such party at the County Lunatic Asylum for Middlesex in 1848.

Have you embarked on #Veganuary or #DryJanuary or even both? The problem of alcoholism gave rise to the vogue for hydropathic establishments in the 19thC. In Scotland some of these were large and fine buildings.
Here is a link to a short piece I wrote a few years ago when I was first starting out with the Historic Hospitals site.
