Houston Landing, a new non-profit news operation, launched today here. Funded by some big-money philanthropic organizations here, it’s got $20 million to burn. It has hired away a lot of journalists from the Houston Chronicle, including executive editor Mizanur Rahman, Maggie Gordon, Alex Stuckey, Marie D. DeJesus and more. The CEO is Peter Bhatia, former VP and editor of the Detroit Free Press.

The Houston Chronicle has a bunch of good writers, and one of the best is @sarahesmith23. Based on the tagline at the end of the print edition of this story, she was the main writer on the piece, and presumably wrote the lede, which is just fantastic. (The online byline doesn't indicate the actual writer, sadly.) Worth your time to read.

When a reviewer passes judgement on a tech product or trend, it's a snapshot in time. What you write one day may not be valid months later.
With that in mind, here are updates to five of my columns from 2022. Some things have changed.

Beck's Prime still has some of the best burgers in Houston It's been around for a long time, and this particular store - on Upper Kirby near River Oaks - has been around and not updated since the mid 80s. It was closed for remodeling for a LONG time, one of those "I bet it never reopens" closures. But glad to see it back!
