Official statement by #JustinTrudeau, #PrimeMinister of #Canada, on the passing of the Honourable #MoniqueBégin
"One of the first #women from #Québec to serve in the #HouseOfCommons, Monique Bégin advanced #progressive policies, advocated for #SocialChange, and worked tirelessly to improve the lives of others. Her passing is an enormous loss for our country."

To clarify this further the supremacy of the #houseofcommons in the various #parliamentacts applies to primary legislation and to anything certified by the #speaker as a #moneybill. Because a #commencementorder is secondary legislation it would not be covered by it and could be blocked indefinitely if the #houseoflords chose. Whether it would is another matter.

@marjolica
That is my understanding of the current situation. And parliament can block a commencement order if it wishes. Although it is unlikely that the #houseofcommons would do so the #houseoflords could do so by what is known as a #prayer . That is to say it can "pray against" secondary legislation - and this has indefinite effect.

"My experience of going to the #HouseOfCommons... is that the threshold of understanding of even the most basic stuff about agriculture, and soil and #carbon sequestration, just is not there. There is not the intellectual capacity or expertise in... parliament... to make informed critical decisions" – Maddy Harland, editor of Permaculture, interviewed by @Eceni
“Is this parliament the worst ever?” asks Andrew Rawnsley.
“It is a startling fact that more MPs have been sanctioned by the Commons and/or resigned their seats in disgrace in this parliament than in any other in history.”

“In sometimes openly hostile exchanges with Bryant, Sunak sought to justify missing votes on potential punishments for Boris Johnson and the former minister Owen Paterson, and said he had not yet fully read last week’s six-page report on attacks on the privileges committee by a series of Conservative MPs and peers.”
It was just six pages, Rishi. Some of which was front-matter. I can give you a single-page precis if that would help…

As Bill C-18 Passes House of Commons, Meta Announces News Links Will Be Blocked
Bill C-18 passed the second to last vote. In response, Facebook announced that news links in Canada will be blocked.
The "finding out" phase of Bill C-18 appears to be a go. Early on this month, Meta announced that it wou

@decembr14 It's better for regular members of the Commons to make up their own mind on the punishment of one of their colleagues for lying, rather than the current Ministry guiding them about what to do.
The next step up would be for someone - presumably either the #lordpresident #pennymordaunt or the #PrimeMinister #RishiSunak - to recommend to the #king that he be removed from the #privycouncil . I had assumed that this had happened only in the cases of former #cabinetmnisters jailed for criminal offences - such as #jonathanaitken and #chrishuhne I have since found out that this also happened to #johnprofumo sixty years ago after he had admitted lying to the #HouseofCommons .

A quick recap of where we are on #BorisJohnson.
The #PrivilegesCommittee report has come out and has recommended both a 90 day suspension and denial of a #HouseofCommons #pass. It did decide not to recommend #expulsion.
There will now be a "free" - which means not whipped - vote on the recommendations on Monday 19th June.
There remains scope for further sanctions on #BorisJohnson - and indeed some of his more vocal supporters. I listed them earlier and will do so again.
