Film notes on 'Magic Magic's - 2013

A solid film, great performances but I'm a bit ?? on parts of it. Group of friends plus ring-in cousin go to a remote rural part of Chile. Said cousin unravels, a bit sleep deprivation and alienation. So fucking tense as it goes. I was like 😬

A re-watch but also included in the #HouseOfPsychoticWomen film list for it's depiction of a very unwell single woman. There is great tension in this film, psychological erotic thrillers of the 80s are great.

I think re-watching this now, at this point of life, hearing Michael Douglas' character spout off lines I have heard, coming from men who think I am great but aren't interested in anything serious.

I think before, many years ago now, I was thinking 'she crazy, but yeah you should have kept it in your pants'

but this time

'what a dick, keep it in your pants, but yeah she is unwell and you were giving very mixed signals, actions mean something, you could have avoided this whole thing, instead of engaging in this ego stroking exercise just because someone showed interest in you '

Of course I'm not endorsing her actions etc. At the end I just felt bad for her, and also his wife, who honestly is wonderful.

Glenn Close is iconic and I would like her hair please. I am baffled about Michael Douglas.

A bit of a time jump, revenge, good for her horror, about trauma, betrayal and sisters.

The time line got a bit confusing for me but I was up wayyyyy too late.

Parts were extremely visceral emotionally and physical. A good watch.

This was so beautiful. A tale of desire, s&m, a relationship, moths (literally and metaphorically). A tale of two lovers who goes stale but their desires evolve in different ways and a reckoning and resolution.

This is part of the extended #HouseOfPsychoticWomen anniversary edition, the depictions of the relationship and desire are just so beautifully done, it's ethereal in some parts, the costuming and desire, scenery and haunting score. I made it digitally in Canva, which was a new way for me, but a good experience (I missed the tactile aspect so much). It looks pretty close to my default aesthetic anyway.

Four key characters an unhappy married couple, the wife's brother, who is having an affair with the husband, and mysterious kinda ethereal outsider Veronica.

Veronica lures people out to a remote cabin with an older couple and an alien presence (note: tentacles) and things take a turn.

Themes of untapped desires and unfulfilled sexual needs, Veronica enticing people who are unhappy, offering unknown delight.

Kinda had vibes of 'Possession' (1981 film by Andrzej Żuławski )

Really solid movie, the two main female actors performances are very good.

Claire Foy is excellent as someone voluntarily admitted (or ???) To a psychiatric facility, and her stalker is on staff. No one believes her, and things escalate.

It reminded me of 'the invisible man' (or the other way around. A woman who is trying to say something is wrong but just kinda looked at as hysterical paranoid ramblings.

Was super tense, and apparently shot on a smart phone?

Also there was this neat angle of her only being admitted to get health insurance monies, cool idea but felt a bit tacked on. Capitalism bad everyone

Fun lil psycho thriller slasher - woman with an 'evil' twin, who escaped an asylum, also a very evil looking dog (with a kinda hilarious puppet), VERY creep uncle priest - follows the lead up to the twins' birthday when stuff starts happening. A bit slow in parts but pretty fun anyway

Well this movie is not about an actual witch from the sea. That would have been cool though.

This was pretty disturbing honestly. Haunting flashbacks of abuse (which were harrowing), and Molly is really deeply full of rage and so vulnerable, and really complex.

We watch her drink, take pills, and meet men, have sex, and then exact her revenge.

The ending was really sad, but had a lot of sympathy for her plight, which a lot of films I have seen, don't really do this.

I find the title a bit odd but there is a small part of the film with the story of venus, and I think the kind of circumstances Molly has lived through, lends itself to a mythology like tale, like when women are wronged and turn into monsters.

It was really sad/tough watch but beautifully made film.

Slow burn pseudo vampire adjacent thriller ish.

A very young newly wed woman spending her honeymoon in a stately family home, nightmares and hallucinations, a changing sexual dynamic after their wedding night builds to a escalating dynamic of her feeling hunted.

I like when she is starting to feel very uncomfortable she says something along the lines of ' stop looking at me like a puppy begging for food" when she is not in the mood and he just sits staring at her.

Locating Carmila and how it escalates, the increasing hostility and desperation to sort this stuff out, or shut it down builds to a pretty great ending.

There is a lot of symbols and myth building towards the end which would be great to delve into when I am not so tired.

Film note on 'Spider Baby' (1967) campy house of horrors/Addams Family type movie. Very fun, homicidal precocious teens! One with an affinity with spiders (she was very fun to watch). Wacky.

Watched in broad daylight - these sorts of ghost stories with jump scares - make me very antsy.

Anyway, weird shit happening in this house, boyfriend goes on problem solving mode setting up cameras, openly antagonising the presences in the house by jumping around being all like ME MAN ME PROTECT HOUSE ME PROTECT WOMAN.

Ignoring his girlfriends clear discomfort and even ANGER, and fear about the camera, using the ouija board, preventing her calling some sort of psychic demonologist guy - not listening to her at all ready, and toting his camera around to record.

I am curious about what might have been the main woman's history or recollections of the past hauntings, she lost all confidence in the end and was a shell of herself (until you know possession and disappearing into the night). You don't get much of her backstory, would have fleshed out her character a bit more.

I think I was so annoyed at him I forgot to be scared. Pretty good ghost film though.

Nunsploitation!

Sister Gertrude is a senior nun at an asylum. She is unwell, suffering bad headaches, dizziness, hallucinations etc after the removal of a brain tumour. Her faith is waning and she is also addicted to morphine. Because of the above she is just not a nice person. She also has like a double life where she goes out, changes into civilian clothes and seduces strangers.

She begins to have some really weird hallucinations about murder. Is she the one who is killing the elderly patients?

Her roommate (who is totally in love with her) seems to be a central figure in the hallucinations and ...you can probably guess where this goes.

Having to keep things together where you live where you work, with addiction and losing faith, but also not feeling in control of your body (i suppose both from having a tumor, and also blacking out, hallucinations) - some recurring themes in the movies.

A psychosexual murder horror. Some nice flourishes in the film making, costuming of the nuns, setting and music but didn't get into as much as some of the other films on the list. Still not bad though.

Also the fist film on the list so far where you see penis just out there. So there is that.

Kathleen Quinlan plays a 16 year old, admitted to a psych ward after attempting to take her own life. Retreating to a secret world, with its own language, feeling like she is poisonous.

Follows her progress, day to day interactions with staff and other patients.

i have a few misgivings about some of the depictions of mental health but there is a lot of good stuff in there, and a lot of catharsis, quite anxious watch in some parts. Also nice to see a psych ward where the staff are not out and out monsters.

Didn't like the ending much.
