The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) latest survey of their membership reveals expectations that #houseprices will fall at the same time that #rents will rise as competition for #housing moves from buying to renting as #mortgage rates stay high(er).

the #housingcrisis is hurting this who are worse off, who cannot afford to buy but need to either relocate for #work or other reasons...

It will be little surprise to you that the combination of #costoflivingcrisis, #houseprices remaining high & the need for parents to help their children through these crisis has led to a 28% rise in #equityrelease plan(s) purchased year-on-year 2021-22 (FCA data obtained by FT).

The 'fiscal drag' of holding #inheritancetax thresholds static while #houseprices continue to rise is behind the record IHT annual tax paid of over £7bn last financial year... certainly as more houses break the £325k threshold for IHT, more estates are becoming liable for tax on death... is it time to raise that threshold?

But only around 7% of all estates each year pay IHT, which gives some indication of its potential redistributive possibilities.

And so the dip in #houseprices continues, but, lthose currently unable to afford to buy a house of their own will continue to be frustration about stratospheric house prices in the UK.

Looking at a longer record of house prices as a multiple of average earnings; we need to get back to the multiples prevalent before the 1990s to see more accessibility for #firsttimebuyers.
