''Highly pathogenic avian #influenza (HPAI) #H5Nx viruses can cause neurological #complications in many mammalian #species, including #humans.
Neurological disease induced by #HPAI H5Nx viruses in mammals can manifest without clinical respiratory disease.
HPAI H5Nx viruses are more #neuropathogenic than other influenza A viruses in mammals.
Severe neurological disease in mammals is related to the neuroinvasive and neurotropic potential of HPAI H5Nx viruses.''

1/ Three papers in latest #Eurosurveillance issue (03 Aug 2023) are on outbreaks of highly pathogenic #AvianInfluenza A(#H5N1) virus infection in animals. #HPAI
"Highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) virus infection on multiple fur farms in the South & Central Ostrobothnia regions of Finland, July 2023"
▶️ First reported on 14 July, an outbreak of avian influenza among farmed foxes, minks & raccoon dogs
▶️ Up to 27 July, animals on 20 farms have been affected

of interest #HPAI, the dead gulls found elsewhere on the reserve were almost entirely 1/2/3rd years rather than full adults.
So they wouldn't have been tolerated within the healthy colony, where lots of adults were agressively defending their chicks. And wherever the younger gulls caught HPAI, the adult gulls in the colony weren't going there themselves.
Why is this? Younger gulls use different freshwater ponds to the adults for cleaning? Are they using a different food source?
Oh, how confidence inspiring it is to hear the same people who have minimized #COVID19 risk since January 2020 are now in television minimizing #HPAI #avianinfluenza risk. Interpretation: the virus replicates in mammals and spreads via respiratory pathway, and these people wouldn't admit it even if the human pandemic had already started.
