Does anyone have install media for HP-UX UNIX for M68k, version 9 or below?
My friend @RetroHoosk is looking for it. Please ping them!
Boosts appreciated :)

My first contact with #vi was in the 90s using a #vi clone called #elvis, running on a #HPUX UNIX.
#Elvis was one of the pioneering vi clones, widely admired in the 90s for its conciseness & number of features.
Elvis also went on to influence the development of #Vim a bit later. đ
@keithzg @kpeace @aral My sweet summer child, even in the pre-1.0 betas #Netscape was on #Windows, #Mac, and a panoply of #Unix platforms (#DEC #Tru64 (then called OSF/1 AXP), #HPUX, #SGI #IRIX, IBM #AIX, #SunOS, Sun #Solaris, #BSDI, and #Linux): http://home.mcom.com/archives/
It wasnât âported.â

Good grief we do get some obscure stuff! "A Beginner's Guide to HP-UX" published by Hewlett Packard, 1991. #OSarchaeology #HPUX
@stefano I grew up with #Unix and had my first own experiences in the 1980s with #MINIX on an ATARI ST, #SINIX (Siemens #Unix derivat), and with #HPUX, #Solaris and #IRIX at the university.
#FreeBSD is my favourite #BSD (server) OS. I use it mainly because of its versatility. My use cases are firewalls, containerisation via #jails and VMs via #bhyve.
As desktop and mobile OSes I use the Apple #Unix derivates.

I'm just gald that #hp stuff works with everything out of the box - including even ancient and latest #Linux distros...
The only machines with better compatibility are #NeedlePrinters and #Xerox #WorkCentre Laser machinces, cuz those even come with #MSDOS, #OS2 and #Unix drivers for obscure stuff like #Solaris 7.x #HPUX and #AUX...

When using #GNU ls(1), it supports the following file types:
- regular file
b block special file
c character special file
C high performance (âcontiguous dataâ) file
d directory
D door (Solaris)
l symbolic link
M off-line (âmigratedâ) file (Cray DMF)
n network special file (HP-UX)
p FIFO (named pipe)
P port (Solaris)
s socket
? some other file type
Only "-", "b", "c", "d", "l" "p", and "s" are used in #Linux however.

@Silversnapples @philheppenstall @Swebb63
I understand what Phil was saying, and this is exactly why I have the @JdeBP account.
For the benefit of MastodonApp.UK I can offer this translation from the jargon of Hippie-Unix:
Phil was clearly stoned in the 1990s.
'Peace and Love and vi key bindings, baby! "set -o emacs" is just what The Man wants you to type, man!"

I know #vi, and all the other command line tools. But I still ask myself why I need them in 2023. I am not a techie, not a nerd and I dont want to be a unix admin. I want to use the machine. Not make it a hobby. I was a #unix sysadmin in the 90s, #HPUX, #AIX, Interactive Unix, Motiv, X-Windows, Looking Glass, #SunOS, #Solaris, but then, thanks God, #NextStep.
Getting back to Pop!OS. They explain why hibernation is not setup by default. But give a very good, excellent explanation how to do it

@acn128 my former employer used a proprietary printing system for their #HPUX machines. It was designed by #Siemens and was called "Xprint" (not to be confused with the X11 tool of the same name). If you think CUPS is hell, you should try Xprint and will know better ... *scnr*
Iâm feeling the pull. Time to revisit #Gentoo after 20 years and see whatâs different (last ran it on dual Celeron 533 CPUs on an Abit BP6 in 2003 before moving to Budapest).
And with all of the #CDE Iâve seen around for the last few months, time to give #NsCDE a whirl (CDE on #HPUX 10.20 was my first taste of CDE, and it has stayed with me all these years).
Combine the two? You bet!

Dunno. This is new territory for me.
The closest thing we had to containers when I was still in IT was Jails on #HPUX (most likely "borrowed" from #FreeBSD). My understanding is that they're basically a way of managing a really nice chroot system. Not quite as plug-and-play as modern containers, but decent.
But that's just a guess. I didn't work with them directly.
#Elvis was the first #vi clone I've ever worked with.
It was the editor installed in the #HPUX servers I used to work with in my first job as a programmer.
I don't think vi is the best editor out there, but the simple fact that this was the only decent editor I had access to back then was enough to run my muscle memory until today.
