Good morning from #Pasadena. A tiny bit cooler today, technically, with a high of 34ºc (93ºF.) Up early to finish packing garden waste into the bins for pick up. I only send waste which contains invasive plants with the potential of sprouting and spreading or that contain seeds. The rest I compost in-place with a technique called #Hügelkultur, but my technique also includes deep depressions that I fill with biomass then cover up. Off to get some work done. Happy #HumpDay!

I save/collect broken #tree #twigs & #branches & logs & #deadwood in old garbage bins. I use them for #Hügelkultur purposes. #German word meaning #MoundCulture or #HillCulture . This is a practice that has existed both in German & #EasternEurope societies for hundreds of years. The concept was further developed by #SeppHolzer - an expert in permaculture, in his book Sepp Holzer’s Permaculture: A Practical Guide to Small-Scale, Integrative Farming, and Gardening.

A good morning in the #garden. Potted on the #tomatoes into buckets, dressed them with #vermicompost and gave them a good drink. Bit of a tidy up, including helping neighbour cut off an overhanging tree limb from their side (going to #hugelkultur that beast, much to neighbour's confusion). Now making shokupan buns to have with roast pork later. But it's getting hot so...siesta first!

@ECityMom Hi, "no one told you" that digging roots is a thing because most people build soil over the top of existing issues to reduce labour. The tenets of #permaculture speak of this, good gardening is about energy efficiency, particularly if you want to keep doing it for decades. Try looking up "lasagna gardening" for one method that might suit. Look up #hugelkultur for the people that actually dig wood (basically roots) into the ground for the benefits that woody debris brings. "The problem is the solution" - Bill Mollison.

Harvesting a hugelkultur bed will allow us to:
- make bedding for the worms,
- give mulch to our trees,
- create homemade potting mix
- create fertilizer and top dressing for the grass
- create a compost activator for fire compost piles.

All of this is free and organic.

@OxgardenZ @tickfoot I built two & they are older than I thought. I built the the larger one in 2011 (6m long, 0.5m deep, 1.2m high). The other (3m long, 0.5m deep, 1m high) in 2013 & covered in daisies, which are staying.

They’re still going but only 30-50 cm higher than the rest of the plot. Their height’s really dropped over the last 5 yrs since the wood inside’s broken down. I’ll move the soil over this year to bring up the level of the plot elsewhere. #Allotment #Hügelkultur #Gardening

Our land sits in a "saddle" between two higher hills north and south, draining off to the Chesapeake Bay to our west and St. Lawrence Seaway to the east. That means we have quite a lot (increasing amounts) of water pooling and flowing across our property.

Rather than finding ways to divert that more quickly, as a #ClimateChangeMitigation and #biodiversity promoting strategy I'll be experimenting with turning some of those EAB killed ash trees into #hugelkultur beds.
