Archaeologists have unearthed a 300,000-year-old wooden throwing stick in Germany that was used by early humans to hunt animals. The stick is a rare example of a Palaeolithic weapon that predates the invention of spears and bows. The stick demonstrates our ancestors' high level of cognitive and motor skills and ability to adapt to different environments .

Time for another piece in my human evolution series "Indecent Descent", and apart from the chart itself, this is the most characters I ever fitted into a single "I.D." picture. Time to dive into human evolution again, this time landing about 1.8 million years ago.

A fossilized skull found in China may belong to a new branch of the human family tree, according to a new study. The skull, which dates back to 300,000 years ago, has features of both Homo sapiens and Denisovans, two different groups of ancient humans. The discovery challenges the current understanding of human evolution and suggests that modern human traits emerged earlier than previously thought.

Just finished the Netflix documentary Unknown: Cave of Bones then saw this news.
Really amazing to see we are not the only human species to have proper burial and ritual.
Scientists in China discovered fossils of a possible third human lineage, neither Denisovan nor Homo erectus, but more closely related to Homo sapiens. The fossils have a mix of features from both modern and ancient hominids, dating back to 300,000 years ago. This finding challenges the conventional view of human evolution and suggests that East Asia had multiple branches of human ancestors. #HumanEvolution #Fossils #China https://greekreporter.com/2023/08/05/remains-china-third-human-lineage/?utm_source=flipboard&utm_content=HariTulsidas%2Fmagazine%2FMind+and+Matter

Scientists have created a digital model of the skull of a Homo floresiensis, a human ancestor that lived on the island of Flores in Indonesia. The model reveals new details about the brain and facial features of the species, also known as the hobbit. The model also helps to compare the hobbit with other human relatives, such as Neanderthals and modern humans.

Some of our ancient ancestors were cannibals, even though we are biologically predisposed to be averse to that. In the past, some may have ate the flesh and bones of their own kind and other hominins for various reasons. Cannibalism, a practice in human evolution, probably under stress, left traces in the fossil record. Cannibalism is a dark and fascinating aspect of our past.

Interesting study revealing epigenetic changes in whole-blood cells post-exercise! More than how exercise impacts human physiology, this study reminds us that humans evolved as an active species a comparatively short time ago. And why our rapid change to sedentary lifestyles is contrary to our own evolution. And unhealthy.

What a treat to visit Atapuerca today with colleagues Emiliano Bruner, Antonio Profico, Amelie Beaudet and Edwin de Jager! 🤩
And thank you to Emiliano and the other organisers for a wonderful conference on cortical evolution.
Recently a new, more accurate reconstruction was made of the face of Homo floresiensis by forensic experts. And you know what? For a "cute anime girl" fantasy interpretation, I'm actually proud of how much I got right.

Scientists have found that what makes us human may not be what we have in our DNA, but what we lack. They identified 10,000 pieces of DNA that are present in other mammals but deleted in humans. These deletions are related to genes involved in brain and cognitive functions, suggesting that they played a role in human evolution.
