We had a great time at our #datacollection on #StatsraadLehmkuhl last night. We sailed from #Bergen, past #Askoy and towards #Oygarden in great weather.
The bridge crew got to test the #HoloLens #AR application that Floris van den Oever has developed for his #PhD. The crew found the interface to be intuitive, and saw the potential in having information about other ships as overlays in their visual field. Looking forward to more field testing!

We are hiring a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer (Assistant/Associate Professor) in Cyber Security and Digital Harms. We are particularly interested in candidates with research interests in the human side of things (recent hires have been technical) but feel free to talk to us if you have any interest in the role and do pass on to others who you think might be interested: https://www.jobs.ac.uk/job/DCB581/lecturer-senior-lecturer-in-cyber-security-and-digital-harms-550711 #CyberSecurity #Jobs #UKHE #HumanFactors #Cybercrime #CyberLaw #UsableSecurity #HCI #Cyberpsychology

Hey #HumanFactors #vr folks,
I am just starting to experiment with #Unity to do pedestrian research. Do you have any tips for assets, video tutorials or whatever? I would appreciate any help!
I am still waiting for one of the major brands to come out with a laptop that does have the power switch in a location that is easily accessible when the lid is closed and a current iPhone that has no buttons on one side, so you can't accidentally take photos or lock the device when holding it like a human.
<rant>Alas everybody copies arbitrary design choices, while at the same time refusing to commit to a standard when it comes to interoperability.</rant>

Perhaps a new #introduction, since I just moved over from another instance? I grew up on an island on the west coast of #Norway, and currently live in the city of #Bergen.
Trained as a #ClinicalPsychologist and with a PhD in #Neuroscience, I currently work as a professor of general #psychology at the #UniversityOfBergen. I have interests in #AppliedPsychology, #DecisionMaking, #HumanFactors and #OpenScience
Afather of three, I enjoy culture, urban life, and (mostly short-distance) travel.

Hi everyone, I've been on Mastodon for a while but I'm new to hci.social - glad to finally find a federate that aligns with my interests. I have a background in #humanfactors, and I'm interested in human-machine teaming, human-automation interaction, and the application of #formalmethods and other rigorous mathematical approaches to these domains. Open to further discussion!
@mbbroberg Have you looked at Nottingham's Human Factors and Ergonomics MSc? Lots of applied cognitive science...

I'm starting to think I'm missing out on the a focus on #HumanFactors and #Ergonomics. I know a few folks who went that direction and I see a local program that has a healthy overlap with what I want to learn. So maybe that's the path.
The weekend in ICU starts badly
There should be a checklist for this too

🌶️ take: ChatGPT is Natural Language Processing's Netscape moment.
The Internet had existed for a while in 1995. However, Netscape's GUI-based browsing made the technology *usable* by the masses, creating an internet revolution.
LLMs have long existed. It was the GUI-based chat interaction of ChatGPT that made them usable by the masses.
At the heart, technology, especially usable ones, has always been about it.

@thomasfuchs @mkj @b_cavello It was a fair effort for 1983, but I agree, viewing distance looks impractical if not impossible! Check out the cute mouse...

No one goes to work with the intention of making mistakes and yet sometimes, despite the best of intentions, things go wrong. We need to stop judging the efforts of others and start understanding why the actions and decisions taken when things went wrong, still made sense to the people involved in the incident.
What obstacles were there to obtaining good #SituationalAwareness?

"It's now easier to block spam" "Pin more people" and similar messages... not just Google, MS Visual Studio threw a couple at me yesterday... but Android is bad for them.
[I don't give a shit about the new feature. I need to use the app now.]
Popups and announcements on opening apps is a bad thing. Example: trying to navigate in traffic? Not the time for a blocking popup that you can't voice acknowledge.
@mononcqc It's an interesting topic (speaking as a #HumanFactors specialist) but in my many years of experience, including design of ATC systems, no engineer ever allocated functions using a Fitts List approach. The 'substitution myth' is itself a myth
This week I decided to revisit Sidney Dekker's #paper titled "MABA-MABA or Abracadabra? Progress on Human–Automation Co-ordination", which discusses something called "the substitution myth", a misguided attempt at replacing human weaknesses with automation.
Instead, the suggestion is to focus on cooperation and team work, rather than substitution:

@tom_geraghty I think the categorisation of #HumanError (in the Newsletter) is missing some important differences and nuances. You might find this table of interest which I produced some years ago (drawing on Patrick Hudson's 'Bending the Rules' as I recall) 🙂
