Mary Shepherd on Hume's theory of ideas and denial of necessary connexions: "The confusion of intellect resulting from such notions as these is so great, that it is impossible to understand where to begin to set it in order, or whether it be possible to introduce into it any arrangement whatever."

I couldn't agree more! (Even though I kind of love Hume.)

Indeed. He was a product of his time as are we all. Lovely flowing prose, though. I love his stuff on the as a sort of frame of reference rather than an object of some kind. "Was ist das ich?" etc. is good on the topic too. Another fan :-)

I may be old fashioned but I think is still useful today. He's THE jumping off point for many topics. For example, I always suggest reading Hume before reading as so many of Hume's ideas are taken up by Kant who fancied himself as a bit of an expert on Hume.

Mind is not just a substance. It’s a process. The philosophy of David Hume challenged the traditional views of how our minds work. Hume argued that our mind is not a rational and unified entity, but a bundle of impressions and ideas that are constantly changing and associating. By examining our minds, we can discover the nature and limits of human knowledge.

Philip Skelton (1707-87), religious writer, critic of Hume, a fast friend and a fast enemy who sold his library twice to raise money for famine relief, died in Dublin in 1787.

"No priestly dogmas, invented on purpose to tame and subdue the rebellious reason of mankind, ever shocked common sense more than the doctrine of the infinite divisibility of extension, with its consequences; as they are pompously displayed by all geometricians and metaphysicians, with a kind of triumph and exultation."

My boiler broke last week - will I ever be able to trust it, or the company who failed to properly service it and left us stranded without heat for three days, again? This week’s Philosophy Unleashed looks at trust, induction, Hume, Descartes, prisons, and boilers… philosophyunleashed.com/theblo

For example, at the quantum realm cause and effect can sometimes take place in cycles, with the effect actually causing the cause, not to mention something like quantum entanglement or “spooky action at a distance” that have little to no relevance to everyday cause and effect.
Unifying/synthesizing these different models/pictures of reality could mean the ultimate Faustian pact where human mind and universe join hands to do some truly weird and wonderful things.

Today recorded a out in the Woods for the first time. Took a bit of doing to get the volume right but I'm reasonably happy with the output.

In this episode, I speak in the Wood about what I'm interested in why. This includes , , , , , , , , , , and more.

Since ancient times, there have been different kinds of philosophical skepticism. David Hume, like Cicero, opts for a mitigated form. Here's a Sadler's Lectures podcast episode discussing his reasons for that
