For most of the summer there were only 2 hummingbirds in the yard. Now it feels like there are a dozen. Some probably hatched here or nearby, and the rest, I guess, are migrants. What I learned today about hummingbirds in southeast Michigan:

We have a peak of hummingbird migration in early September. Local hummingbirds may have moved on, others will still be arriving.

Adult males leave the earliest, with 90% of them gone by Labor Day every year.

It's a percussive day for the #birds in my yard. The American #Crows are mostly bill-clacking and making a laughing sort of chatter. Anna's Hummingbirds are having dogfights over the bottle brush tree, yelling at each other with their ch ch ch calls. My hands are too sore to do much gardening today but maybe I can go sit out there and find out what the birds are talking about. I mean, besides the #hummingbirds, who are obviously just trash-talking each other.

This tiny mighty fighter was the sole owner of my backyard and all of its flowers and sugar feeders.

I’m asking a lot from my powershot SX70HS. It’s a consumer grade camera. These pictures were taken over the past couple days in my backyard. I get about 2 hours full sun without any shade from trees.

2) Absolutely gorgeous afternoon, lots of #hummingbirds out in the Avenues.
3) Long #bus ride with my kid after her clarinet lesson at the end of the day, making tired jokes together.

Feeding hummingbirds is a good thing, but I like this Russellia plant dripping nectar onto the flagstones below, instead of those funky plastic flowers filled with corn sugar water. Wish I had a good camera to catch the image of the bird when it is feeding.

My wife used to like to sit at our kitchen tables and watch a humming bird visit the feeder she set up right off of our back porch. For a while she wasn't sure if there was more than one humming bird or not. She doesn't enjoy it as much now that she knows there are at least two humminb birds and humming birds are territorial, so they're actually chasing each other away from the feeder. 😒 #HummingBirds
