While we all were in need of a vacation, this trip was especially for Gypsy. The cooler weather and exercise has been great for her old achy joints after a hot, sluggish summer. We don't want to overdo things, so our hiking isn't quite as ambitious as in her younger years, but she's surprised us with her enthusiasm and eagerness to get up and go every day. We wish we could get her out hiking like this every day!

And here's what everyone comes to see! Pincushion Mountain is a rocky point looking east of Grand Marais over Lake Superior to the south and hills rising from the lake to the north. It's surprisingly flat and appears scarred from glacial activity across the surface.

Today was our first time exploring the Pincushion Mountain trails just up the bluff from Grand Marais, MN. The area is a maze of Nordic ski and mountain bike trails. We followed a relatively new segment rerouting the Superior Hiking Trail to its own dedicated route.

The new trail cut a large stone in the trail, revealing a large grapefruit-sized geode!

The huskies were more fascinated by the chipmunks hiding in the holes under the other rocks and logs. The humans snacked on the few remaining late-season raspberries and thimbleberries.

We stopped at Two Harbors on the way north for lunch and a splash in Lake Superior. Everyone enjoyed scrambling on the rocks and exploring the little tide pools.

Tonttu got a full immersion baptism in the waters of Gitche Gumee: he hopped down a small cliff into what he thought was shallow water and ended up over his head! Good thing he was wearing his harness and could get some help being hauled back up to dry land.

We managed to escape for a quick vacation! We're staying at a small cabin on Devil Track Lake near Grand Marais, Minnesota.

No grand hiking plans for us: we're looking for relatively easy paths that won't challenge Gypsy's elderly joints too much.

Autumn is on its way! Returning from our loop around the prairie, Gypsy found an apple under one of the feral trees along the trail. She carried it proudly until the paparazzi hounded her for a photo.

Tonttu has no respect for his elders and dashed in to seize the prize while it was unattended.

(Gypsy didn't really seem to mind: for her, the joy is in the hunt, not the eating.)

Today was hot and humid: not a day to be outdoors. But Thursday was wonderfully cool and a great day to go #hiking with the #huskies at Nerstrand Big Woods State Park in south-central Minnesota.

Tonttu likes the idea of hiking and wishes you'd wrap up the photo taking so he can get moving again!

It was a quiet Sunday for us today. We got out for a walk around the neighborhood before rains moved in, bringing dampness, but also welcome coolness from the heat of recent weeks.

Police sirens down the road outside our neighborhood got the local coyotes howling during the day, which is unusual: we usually don't hear them until after dark.

More #hiking with the #huskies at Lebanon Hills yesterday. Enjoying one more relatively moderate day before summer temps and dewpoints return.

The strong summer sun lit up the canopy with bright yellow-green of backlit leaves.

While summer is still going strong, there are occasional whiffs of fall leaves now and then. We're all looking forward to cooler temperatures!

Tonttu, the Portage Tollmaster, waits for canoeists crossing between O'Brien Lake and Cattail Lake at Lebanon Hills Regional Park (South Twin Cities Metro region, Minnesota).

Afton is our main go-to #hiking destination in summer, with the St. Croix River conveniently located at the base of the trail back up to the parking lot for #huskies to cool off in.

Tonttu wears a "swamp cooler" vest that helps cool by evaporation, but really, his whole body becomes a swamp cooler once he soaks up as much of the river as he can carry.

Out for a short #hike with the #huskies at Afton State Park before the heat of the day settled in. We started with the sunny southern prairie while it was relatively cool, then dropped down to river level for the return.
