#HybridWork reconsidered through the lens of architectural #sociology presents itself as a question of "considering the social and organisational impact when the spatial configuration of the office is no longer the sole arena for solidarities to form and for practices to be enacted. Digital tools and their different sets of affordances for interaction, social cohesion and organisational culture need reflecting on, likewise".

If each of the studies we reviewed was considered on its own, it could be argued that #HybridWork is a continuation of pre-pandemic trends such as greater flexibility in working processes and locations.

Taken together however, a different picture emerges.

We argue that the changes imposed by hybrid work are potentially as profound as the changes introduced by Taylorism in the early 20th century

#HybridWork is incredibly challenging to research due to an avalanche of material published since 2020, not only in the scholarly domain but also in the grey literature.
We're talking millions of hits on Google and several hundred of journal publications.
There is little guidance on how to research a topic in such flux at speed so we relied on an informal literature review method.
(If anyone on #AcademicChatter has ideas on how to do this systematically, I'd be all ears)

If each of the studies we reviewed is considered on its own, it could be argued that the changes from #office based to #HybridWork are mainly a continuation of existing trends, for example regarding flexibility.

Taken together, we argue that the studies show something fundamentally different.

We argue that the changes of working practices towards hybrid work are possibly as profound as the changes imposed by Taylorism in the early 20th century.

New paper published!
In 'The challenges of hybrid work: an architectural sociology perspective', we - my wonderful colleagues Matt Thomas, Rosica Pachilova and I - scan the emerging literature since 2020 and compare it to a small sample of participants with lived experience of hybrid work.

Like with all complex issues, imho the answer lies in the multitude of shades of grey in between the two extremes of 100% #WfH and a strict #RTO

If companies achieve a healthy balance based on their work processes and org culture needs, that would be my place to start.
