My piece on how #HydePark was shaped by the streetcar system. The short answer is that #HydePark may be part of #Chicago because the streetcars connected it early on (an observation by Stephen Treffman). The trolley/cable lines went where people were flocking to entertainment, development followed afterward. And we became part of the largest cable car system in the world.

Every year since 1974, there's a Mum and Bulb sale in #HydePark #Chicago. Technically a fundraiser, the real goal of the committee was beautifying the neighborhood after decades of neglect and the chaos of urban renewal. The Fair this year is September 23 from 9to 4 in the shopping center couryard. There will be a table with perennial native plants this year--trying to help the neighborhood's ecosystem.

Still working on my article on how transit builds a neighborhood--after the 1893 World's Fair was a huge hit, entrepreneurs opened a German beer hall on the block just to the southwest of the Midway. The cable car company that owned the line on Cottage Grove saw the chance to increase ridership, bought the largely empty block, and opened Sans Souci amusement park. The area remained an entertainment district for 60 years and Cottage Grove became a commercial corridor. #Chicago #HydePark #Transit
