How transit shapes a neighborhood. Hyde Park was an undeveloped suburb when the street railways looked for opportunities, but it wasn't commuters that drew them south of the city. It was entertainment. The first tracks went to Washington Park and the racetrack. The second track cut over to the lake and the newly landscaped north end of Jackson Park. I just wrote about #football and Stagg Field, but it was also the location for huge track and field events, like the Olympic track and field trials and interscholastic championships. Later, apparently until the end, the space under the stands were groomed for skating. The University did have an ice hockey team for awhile.
