"What a Friend We Have in Jesus" is a Christian #hymn originally written by preacher #JosephMScriven as a poem in 1855 to comfort his mother, who was living in Ireland while he was in Canada. Scriven originally published the poem anonymously, and only received full credit for it in the 1880s. The tune to the hymn was composed by #CharlesCrozatConverse in 1868. The hymn also has many versions with different lyrics in multiple languages.

"Morning Has Broken" is a #Christian #hymn first published in 1931. It has words by English author #EleanorFarjeon and was inspired by the village of #Alfriston in #EastSussex, then set to a traditional #ScottishGaelic tune, "#Bunessan". It is often sung in children's services and in #funeral services. English #popMusician and #folkSinger #CatStevens included a version on his album #TeaserAndTheFirecat (1971).

I arranged a hymn from the 1800s, "More Holiness Give Me", into a piano solo that sounds like like it could be played in a smoke-filled bar (or at least a Famous Dave's). In verse 3 I mashed it up with "Amazing Grace" cuz I could.

An old #Finnish church #hymn (technically, a song but whatever) my grandmother loved came to mind for some reason. She immigrated to America from #Finland in the 1910s and met my grandfather on the ship heading to Ellis Island. I remember a year or two of Kool-aid and cookies visits with her.

“Armond lapset, kaikki tälle”: A line from the song fondly addressed to fellow members of her church, “dear children [of God], always there”—reliable, held close, a regular part of life over a century ago.
