Hang in there, my fellow researchers and practitioners, soon (in a few years) we will reach the "Slope of Enlightenment" ;-)

If you've been around in tech for a while, you are very familiar with hype cycles. Every so often (about once a decade) an old idea gets new steam and everyone gets crazy super excited about it before they all realize that it's just a small iterative improvement on what came before, if that. The deeper reasons for its previous failure were never addressed, but there's no shortage of whiz-bang demos showing how Cool™️ the thing is now.

VR just got out of its latest hype cycle. There's a few neat games and some interesting applications for flight simulators and training scenarios. There's a few power user applications and nothing mainstream. The headsets are absurdly expensive and bulky. People who had nausea before still have it. Nobody wants to trade Zoom meetings for that Metaverse nonsense. It's just like it was in the 90s but with better graphics and a slightly lower price point for low end hardware.

The latest hype cycle is "AI", or whatever is passing for it these days. ChatGPT is certainly interesting and entertaining, but it has all of the confidence of the most wrong people on Reddit and StackOverflow. Sure, it sometimes provides a very useful answer, but usually it's a incoherent string of nonsense that sounds truthy. It's been fed a mountain of garbage from the public Internet and decided that the crowd's conviction is a substitute for knowledge and wisdom. It's not magic, it's language processing code we've had for decades wearing a new suit!

The surest sign that it's nonsense is everyone wants to line up behind it now, just like they did with blockchain silliness. (Nobody serious reads NISTIR 8202 and thinks "yes, that solves a problem anyone has".) Some of us who have been around the block for a while have seen this play, and we're worth listening to.

Where are the hypes living after they reached the top?
Do the hypes have a relationship to the year before? Or are they each year completely new done without taking care what had been written before?
Is there a logical relationship?
