I'm watching an old talk from #mathiasbuus creator of #dat, #hypercore and now #keet and #holepunch and it acts as a great intro to #p2p #distributed networks and also has a lot of references about #bittorrent and #piratebay.
Makes you wonder how can a folk turn full #techbro in a few years and dedicate his time working and promoting #web3 stuff and #cryptocurrencies ...
(Spoiler alert: money!)

Anyone got a #bluesky invite knocking around? I signed up on the first day sign-ups were opened, 'cause I'd tried #ssb & a lot of the #hypercore stuff; but I've still not had an invite
My attempts to self-host a PDS didn't get very far, quite a lot of moving parts and not a lot of documentation (which is fair, it is still in beta)
Wonder if it's cause I used my self-hosted email..? 😢 #bsky

Not to toot my own horn, but I'm still very happy with this #p2p #database I wrote that uses #hypercore with a MongoDB-like interface.
Hey folks! The 2.0.0 release of #Agregore has been tagged and compiled! This features fixes for #MacOS, an upgraded #Hypercore-Protocol, and better support for #Gemini when loading it from #p2p protocols. This also involves an upgrade of Electron to 23 and an overhaul to using ESM for the #JavaScript back ends.
Download it and check it out for yourself!

First, I'm going to create a new #hypercore based website. This used to be called #dat and I think is now called holepunch.to (all very hard to search for :P ).
You can find the docs for the protocol handlers here: https://github.com/RangerMauve/hypercore-fetch/
Just loaded my first #p2p site published to the new version of https://distributed.press with proper #ipfs #hypercore and #dnslink support!
The DNSLink stuff is a bit iffy for hypercore, but I'll be fixing that up tomorrow.
Now stuff can be published via Distributed Press, and viewed via @agregore
What's cool is that in addition to keeping your content online, you can easily configure it to set up DNS keys for you by delegating with an NS DNS entry for the `_dnslink` subdomain on your domain.

@Moon @cuaxolotl You might enjoy this comparison article I wrote about #IPFS, #Hypercore #BitTorrent and #SSB.

It doesn't get super into the weeds on the DHT tho

Āhau is a FOSS project from Aotearoa New Zealand, built to meet the data needs of Māori.
Built on #ssb and #hypercore — here’s a presentation from last year’s FOSDEM https://archive.fosdem.org/2022/schedule/event/ahau/

Is it possible to host a #Mastodon #server using a distributed #p2p system?

So it looks like the DAT/Hypercore folks have gotten into the #web3 racket.
That’s… disappointing.

Hypercore: https://hypercore-protocol.org : Hypercore is a protocol and framework to build p2p applications. Keet is actually based on that, not sure about Cabal. More interesting for developers than end users. They have libraries to holepunch easily, swarm, etc.

I used Beaker Browser back when hypercore was still called dat.
Since the renaming, I've been trying to open every hyper:// url I came across with Beaker Browser and was consistently greeted with a "Site Not Found". It doesn't seem to be able to open dat:// urls either.
Does anybody have a working hyper:// url I can test with?
I am using Beaker Browser 1.1

Paul Frazee (of Beaker Browser &c fame) live-streaming building his distributed social network #ctzn, atop #hypercore protocols. He's on day 13. Hypercore is built to make stuff like this possible. But it's been lacking in people taking up the torch & building apps/networks with it.
> Twitter-style feed and posts. Users follow each other, post to their own p2p databases, and servers aggregate their community's data to provide large-scale indexes in their own p2p databases.

I like that it has domain names for identity, but the user can migrate to new domain names. Write some new auth/identity data in, keep going.

There's been many takes by the dat community, but it seems to me it's really going somewhere now.
