@mckra1g "Put your own oxygen mask on first." Well, a big part of that is because it's dang hard to help anyone when you're suffering from hypoxia yourself, but you CAN help someone who is suffering from hypoxia if you aren't. 🙂 🛬 (Also #hypoxia is insidious, in that it's often quite difficult to tell by yourself that you are suffering from it in time to do much of anything about it.)

Ocean currents, agricultural runoff, landscape, and a variety of other local and regional conditions mean that our oceans have just as diverse an array of habitats as dry land, if not more. Consequently, while we know that, overall oceanic oxygen levels are decreasing, that doesn’t actually tell us how that is progressing in different ecosystems. For that, we actually need to pay people to go check. Fortunately, while I think we don’t spend enough on that, we do spend quite a bit on it, as a species, and so we have some new information about how the ocean’s deoxygenation is progressing in what may be the single most “charismatic” set of oceanic ecosystems – coral reefs.

AAAS: "Breathless Oceans" Climate change is leaching oxygen from the ocean by warming surface waters, increasing metabolic rates of fish + crabs, + boosting stratification of warmer surface water, preventing mixing. In higher latitudes, meltwater from ice + snow creates freshwater layers on top of saltwater, also interfering with mixing by waves + wind. "Scientists for yrs have documented oxygen-starved dead zones in places like the Gulf of Mexico and the Baltic Sea." In 2017 a paper in Nature reported the global ocean had 'already lost some 2% of their oxygen since 1960, roughly double what climate models predicted.' Andreas Oschlies, a biogeochemist at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel notes if the trend continues, it could mean a potential loss of 20% by 2100. Regional variations count. Off the Oregon coast, crabbers in 2002 began pulling up traps full of suffocated crabs, an area 'fed by a deep, oxygen-depleted current from the North Pacific Ocean that wells up near the coast.' Low oxygen levels are routine, but in 2002 scientists found oxygen levels had fallen by 65%. Even if falling oxygen doesn’t kill marine animals, it can interfere with fish hormones crucial to reproduction, stunt growth in young fish, weaken immune systems, and even strike animals blind. Deoxygenation may ultimately be a greater driver of extinctions than acidification + marine heat waves. Time to get serious about climate weirding. #hypoxia #climatechange
