@Linux_Is_Best Honestly just blame the #English language. There's no consistency for compound words (or anything for that matter). 'Fire brigade' but 'firefighter'. 'Head lice' but 'headrest'. 'Bike lane' but 'bikeway'.

Amusingly, in #Dutch, where all compound words are closed, there's a phenomenon called 'English disease' or 'spatitis', where compound words are wrongly opened. 'Fietswiel' becomes 'fiets wiel' (bike wheel). The influence of the English language is often blamed for this, but I'm more wont to blame American programmers. Search engines are rubbish for closed compound words, and spell[ ?]check can't deal with slightly rare closed compound words either. Never mind phone keyboards, where it's always hit-or-miss whether the word you just fat-fingered exists in the phone's dictionary.

The digital age was designed for English first and foremost, and all new digital technology must necessarily flow through English _first_, and I hate it.

TIL: If a song title on Spotify ends with right-to-left characters, it scrolls from right to left. I just had the title scroll the opposite direction than the artist names. #i18n is funny!

LB reminds me of all the fun & fascinating heuristics one uses to diagnose #i18n / #l10n problems. eg, in the language list, does a website sort 🇩🇪 with the Gs (German) or with the Ds (Deutsch)? in the countries list, is 🇨🇦 amongst the Cs (Canada) or with the Ks (Kanada)?

These are the configuration options you will have as a developer for my in-app #translation framework.

You’re in full control of when & how much to request from your users, & what additional instructions you want to give.

for the next major release of league/uri the requirements for installing ext-intl will be removed. You do not need the extension to use the package. However if you are using i18n domains then yes you are require to have either the extension or a polyfill in place else the library will throw. This is not an ideal solution but all the other solution I thought about are ... suboptimal unless proven wrong. #php #uri #url #i18n #domainnames #host

Discussing internationalization (#i18n) issues at work.

A coworker noted that only one customer has asked about it. We have theaters across England and Ireland. As of 2021 there were 880,000 people in England and Wales that don't speak English well, and 160,000 that don't speak it at all. + plenty more in Ireland.

Don't confuse a lack of request for internationalization with a lack of _need_ for internationalization.
