@Theholypumpkin @toby I mean it really depends on one's use-case:
For a lot of people, the @Raspberry_Pi #Pi400 Kit is basically all they need to do their computing needs.

Personally I just tend to install @ubuntu / #UbuntuLTS on most systems as it's a #64bit distro (#RaspberryPiOS is only available for #ARM, #ARM64 & #i386) and comes with support for basically everything anyone ever asked for - including #Steam.
@bunsenlabs is my go-to distro to use on #lowend systems.

Added these symlinks.
#glibc needs some "convincing" to install *everything* to /usr, but it works.
It solves the issue on #aarch64 and #i386 (which both install the program interpreter to /lib by default).
It does NOT solve the issue on #amd64, where the program interpreter is installed to /lib64, but *something* during #GCC build insists on finding it in /usr/lib instead. 🤯
Trying a hack with a hardlink now (after learning that glibc's ldconfig just deletes symlinks to the program interpreter).
#glibc #aarch64 #i386 #amd64 #gcc
Finally, my #Linux-native #GNU toolchain for #FreeBSD's #Linuxulator works for C and C++ on #aarch64, #amd64 and #i386 🥳
I guess that's a good time to actually announce the ongoing project!

@fwaggle is that a real #EeePC 701 4G?
If so, have you tried @Raspberry_Pi #RaspberryPiOS for #i386 or @bunsenlabs #BunsenLabs #Linux for #ix86 on it?

@smyth and I don't just mean for legacy #i386 / #i486 systems or similar but also as something that can be used on even the slowest and tinyest SBCs and still work fine...

@dosnostalgic Am I seeing this correctly?
This looks like someone looked at @rasteri's #Wee86 / #WeeCee and @violenceworks #VT69 and thought:
"How about making a #i386 - based #Cyberdeck based off new, off the shelf parts?"
#cyberdeck #i386 #vt69 #weeCee #wee86
@nano #RaspberryPiOS has the advantage of having the same apps on #i386 as the Rasperry Pi, which makes sense due to @Raspberry_Pi #Pi4B's and #CM4's being scalped af.
#BunsenLabs even works on systems with no GPU as software renderer at good speeds.
As of #Ubuntu LTS: You have the advantage of affordable Support and 5 years of guaranteed updates from day of release free of charge.

@jmcomms @lina @AsahiLinux *nodds in agreement*
I mean that's so basic even ancient #Linux distros & #WindowsXP on #i386 offered "energy saving" as setting, even if that means the CPU & GPU clock down as much as possible.
And whilst Windows starting with Vista will disrecommend it as it'll make the machine slower, I think users shpuld have the option to do so.
I'm pretty shure that #Apple only deactivates it with some obscure config file...

Really builds on #packagebulk, especially as the majority of the #i386 packages will see no use.
I've also had issues with #steam in the past due to #packageconflict with either the #i386 or #amd64 package not updating at the same time as the other one and causing #dependencyhell.

Yet again, I wish #steam dropped #i386 for #linux and provided a distribution for #amd64 only. Hate having to have two versions of lots of packages just for #games.
Majority of games should have 64bit builds, and if they don't, I would be happy to drop them.

I promise there will be more art posts in the future. But I'm excited to say Assembly Nights Season Two is in full swing: http://ratfactor.com/assembly-nights2

There are two #uxn #varvara implementations I would like for my #OldHardware :
- classic #Amiga #AmigaOS (e.g. Kickstart 1.3 OCS A500 with 512kB RAM) booting from double-density #FloppyDisk (880kB) interoperable with the OS (no custom disk format), with mouse, keyboard and joystick support (2 mice could be fun, or 2 sticks, depending on the rom). Bonus points if it's portable enough to work on #AROS #x86 with a simple recompile (i.e, uses OS calls instead of custom chip pokes)
- bare metal #i386 (no FPU, 4MB RAM) bootable from double-density floppy (720kB) but maybe also supporting high density (1.44MB), with mouse + keyboard support - probably sensible to start with a DOS version first?
ideally they would persist data back to the boot disk if desired, and/or use a ram disk
is anyone working on these yet? otherwise I may have enough time next summer...
