And yes, people still use #i486 with #ISA backplanes and #Ethernet-NICs...
https://mastodon.social/@JohannessNilsson/110968505798759149
Granted that's just the "core" system: with only #linux, #toybox and #dropbear as #ssh client...
Nothing else...
It can barely get on #Ethernet and #SSH to #IPv4-reachable hosts.
Not much more.
So it'll turn your #i486 and up into a SSH-Terminal not dissimilar from classic terminals like the #VT320...
#vt320 #i486 #ipv4 #ethernet #ssh #dropbear #toybox #Linux
Wow, @linux does actually improve efficiency over time...
I just compiled a minimal kernel 6.5 for OS/1337 targeting #i486 instead of #i686 and the resulting binary is even 10kB smaller than the one for 6.4.12...
For real: That's awesome cuz it allows me to make the #Floppy version for #486SX a reality and still have #Toybox & #dropbear as #SSH client in it...
Cudos to @torvalds and the maintainers for that:
They really did cleanup the codebase and made it #smol|ler!
#smol #ssh #dropbear #toybox #486SX #floppy #i686 #i486
So for those asking, the #1440kB #Floppy Version of OS/1337 will be a better #Floppinux with #Ethernet & #Network support and packing in #Dropbear as #SSH client.
So you could at the very least use it as a #SSH #Terminal #distro...
Sadly this means it will require at least an #i686 and won't run on an #i486 anymore as a lot of memory was eaten up by #486SX woraround code in the kernel...
#Development #Linux #os1337 #486SX #i486 #i686 #distro #Terminal #ssh #dropbear #network #ethernet #floppinux #floppy #1440kb
@whitekiba Yeah, I got a 6.4.12 for #i486 with #networking to like 1,1 MB...
Which won't fit...
OFC I don't mean to get it running on such an old machine, but have something like #Floppinux that can fit on a 1440kB FDD...
Or with some added drivers and support on some modern Winbond EEPROM to provide a ROM-only terminal system...
This would also help with other projects of mine...
OS/1337 development:
Using the oldest still maintained #longterm #linux #Kernel did yield about 25% size reduction for it's binary...
The good news: I basically have a new size record with the same settings: 551kB for the Kernel and 402k for toybox - both targeting #i486 systems.
The bad news: I've got neither network nor USB support at all!
And I think Network support and having #dropbear as minimal #SSH client is kinda necessary for #OS1337 to work as a "#terminal" system at all.
#Terminal #os1337 #ssh #dropbear #i486 #Kernel #Linux #longterm
@smyth and I don't just mean for legacy #i386 / #i486 systems or similar but also as something that can be used on even the slowest and tinyest SBCs and still work fine...

I didn't know #Linux supported the #i486. For those that do use it, I guess the question is what dropping support means. If it simply means it won't be considered when updating the kernel code, thats fine. But removing any code necessary for it to work may cause issues.
Linus Torvalds considers dropping support for i486 machines in the Linux kernel https://www.linux-magazine.com/Online/News/Linus-Torvalds-Considers-Dropping-i486-Support #Linux #i486 #hardware #kernel #OpenSource #security #LightweightLinux #TinyCoreLinux #FOSS #cmpxchg8b

Oof! Looks like the #Linux kernel may drop official support for the #i486 #CPU. :flan_despair:
